3 militants killed in Kashmir clash

Three militants were killed in a gun battle in India-administered Kashmir, Police said on Tuesday.

The militants were killed overnight in the Shopian district in clashes that erupted after insurgents fired on security forces from a house, Senior Police Officer Shesh Paul Vaid said.

The gun battle, in a region some 50 kilometres south of state capital Srinagar, was blamed on the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit, one of the biggest militant groups in the region.

New Delhi repeatedly accuses Pakistan of sheltering militants and letting them cross over to carry out attacks in India-administered Kashmir.

Islamabad denies the charges and describes the militants as freedom fighters.

India and Pakistan claim the divided Kashmir region in its entirety and have fought two wars over it.

India-administered Kashmir has faced a violent secessionist movement since the late 1980s that has claimed the lives of more than 44,000 people, according to the South Asia Terrorism Portal.
