Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, says the ministry will support the Amalgamated Commercial Tricycles, Motorcycle Owners, Repairers and Riders Association to aid its operations.

Amaechi made the pledge on Wednesday when a delegation of the association paid a courtesy visit on him at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

He said that the ministry would do everything within its powers legally to support and assist the union in achieving its objectives.

“I want to congratulate you on your election as the national president of the association and I will do everything you want me to do but I won’t accept award.

“I will assist you with whatever that is legal,” the minister told the head of the delegation and president of the association Babangida Maihula.

Speaking earlier, Maihula said the visit was to appreciate the minister for his encouragement to the association.

According to him, Amaechi is known for supporting the less privileged of the society and had developed members of the association in Rivers during his tenure as governor.

The president said that they were aware of the vices usually associated with the profession and had included technicians in the union as part of efforts to curb the ugly trend.

He also said the union would soon introduce a tracking device for motorcycles to checkmate crimes.

“We are here to solicit for your support and personal presence at our forthcoming event coming up on Feb. 28, in Abuja.

“Government is encouraging us to be self employed; we have 12 million members and so we are introducing some policies that will help the transport sector,’’ Miahula said.
