Buhari completes 153 Almajiri model Schools

In a bid to support Tsangaya (Almajiri) education programme in the northern states of Nigeria, the Federal Government has completed the construction of 153 model Tsangaya schools.

Alhaji Dikko Suleiman, Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) disclosed this on Monday at a 5-day training of Managers and Teachers of Model Tsangaya schools in Minna.

Dikko noted that the establishment of the schools is already yielding result owing to support it has received from critical stakeholders amongst are the State governors, SUBEB Chairmen, Mallams and Traditional rulers.

He said that Federal Government also provided support for 138 Islamiyyah/Ma’ahad schools across States, adding that Managers and Teachers have been provided with training on how to manage the schools and the pupils in particular.

The Executive Secretary however said that the National Council on Education (NCE) in Abeokuta, Ogun State at it 60th meeting approved the change of the ‘Almajiri” to “Tsangaya”.

He commended the State governments that are implementing the contents of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and urged other states to do the same.

According to him, “State governments are to provide Basic Education to children according to the Nigeria constitution. But since this group of children are special, all hands must be on deck to ensure that they are integrated into Basic Education programme.”

Dikko therefore advised all the participants to utilised the opportunity to expose themselves on the rudiments of Tsangaya education implementation in Nigeria.

Earlier, the acting Secretary of Programmes/Director Millennium Goals,Mr. Ochapa Ogenyi said that the training is to equip the Tsangaya proprietors and teachers with various skills, strategies and requisite knowledge for effective school management.

Ogenyi charged them to make good use of the opportunity offered by the training to share ideas on the challenges facing the administration of the schools and commitment in the discharge of their duties.
