Commercial bus driver in court for allegedly stabbing official of NURTW with knife

NURTW cries out over illegal arrest by police

A commercial bus driver Ariyo Lukman, was on Thursday docked before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly beating and stabbing a man, Sunday Olaopa with a knife on the hand.

Lukman, who resides in Agege area of Lagos, is facing a charge of assault.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 16 at Iju Ishaga Roundabout, Lagos.

He said that the accused assaulted Olaopa and used a knife to stab him on the hand.

The prosecutor said that the complainant, an official of the National Union of Road and Transport Workers (NURTW), said he was performing his duty when the accused assaulted him.

Akeem said that Lukman attacked the complainant because he told him not to park on the road.

“The complainant said the accused got angry and stormed out of his vehicle because he told him to park at the bus stop.

“The accused took a knife from a boy selling orange by the roadside and used it to stab Olaopa on the hand, “the prosecutor said.

He said the offence contravened section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.‎

Newsverge reports that section 171 prescribes three years imprisonment for assault occasioning harm, if found guilty.

The accused, however, denied the allegation levied against him.

The Magistrate, Mr T.O. Shomade, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned further hearing in the case till March 13.
