210,504 PVCs ready for collection in Taraba – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it registered 68,672 voters in Enugu State in the just-concluded first quarter of Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) across the country.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Mr Emeka Ononamadu, disclosed this when he briefed newsmen in Enugu on Tuesday.

Ononamadu said that the voters’ figure comprised 35,386 males and 33,296 females recorded in centres in the 17 local government areas of the state.

He also said that the commission distributed 3,978 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) during the period which began on April 24.

“We have sorted out 1,059 PVC transfer issues as well as replaced a total of 4,000 lost PVCs in which we have 2,353 for males and 1,647 for females.

“It seems that women know how to protect and keep their PVCs more than their male counterparts in the state,’’ he said.

The REC said that INEC had approved the creation of eight additional registration centres in the state to address the challenge of accessing the CVR centres in some council areas.

“The council areas where additional centres are located include Nkanu East, Enugu East, Igboeze North, Igboeze South, Nsukka, Udenu, Udi and Uzo Uwani,’’ he said.

According to him, in spite of the approved additional centres, there are still complaints relating to accessing the centres from people living in difficult terrains in the state.

“On this, we are hopeful that INEC headquarters will respond positively also.’’

The REC said that the CVR had been hitch-free in terms of security, except in few areas in Igbo-Eze North, where security operatives accompanied registration officers.

“We will give out dedicated telephone lines as well as e-mail addresses for complaints that will arise in the second quarter of the CVR, which would commence on July 31.

“We want to implore the media to sensitise Nigerians that the CVR is a continuous exercise and will continue till the 2019 general elections,’’ he said.
