The Olumo Progressive Association, Canada has called on President Muhammadu Buhari, to use his political power to improve the socio-economic wellbeing of Nigerian citizens.
The government was also told to rise to the current economic situation and awaken what has become the sleeping giant in our economy.
This call was made by the President of Olumo Progressive Association, Canada, Chief ‘Femi Shodunke, at the opening ceremony of the 6th Biennial Convention of Egba National Association USA & Canada, held at The Royal Banquet Hall, Mississauga in Canada.
Shodunke noted the need for the government to pay particular attention to industrialisation through the mining and the agricultural sectors. He believes such steps would be of immeasurable benefits to Nigerians who, according to him, lined up to vote the President into power even inside rain and scorching sun.
Speaking further at the event which was tagged “Celebrating our cultural heritage,” Shodunke lamented the state of Nigerian economy. He urged the government to “‘change’ their current ‘change’ to reflect the ‘change’ that will bring the ‘change’ that would lead to meaningful ‘change’ in the lives of Nigerians in all ramifications”.
The Canada-based media guru also reminded the political class that their invitation to come for official events abroad was not an opportunity for them to come and hide their looted money.
He said, “We want them to see what obtains here and make a promise to replicate them in Nigeria for the development of our country and the people who live therein.
“Similarly, to those of us here let us return home and remind our political leaders to wear the progressive garment of development rather than relishing in stealing our common wealth to stupor”.
For the members of the association, Shodunke admonished them to contribute their quota to the development of Egba land. “Let us join hands to pull our financial, manpower and material resources together to help our downtrodden fellow brothers and sisters at home in Nigeria”. He said.
Earlier, Shodunke described himself as a true and committed ‘Egbaman’. He noted that his cell phone number and wrist watch were brought in from Abeokuta years ago and they still work perfectly. He also informed the gathering that his media firm was named Gateway mail, all in an attempt to be closer to his root.
This year’s event was attended by the governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Alake of Egba, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, and his Olori (Dr.) Tokunbo Gbadebo, Egba and Yewa High Chiefs, politicians and Egba sons and daughters in the diaspora.
