FRSC warns school bus drivers on reckless driving

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kuje Unit Command on Thursday, urged school bus drivers in the area to drive carefully and avoid the use of expired tyres to prevent road crashes.

Mr Igbogbo Solomon, the Kuje Unit Commander made the call in an interview with our reporter while speaking on the activities of the unit.

Solomon stressed the need for school bus drivers to adhere strictly to traffic rules to ensure the safety of the children.

He reminded them of the dangers of using expired tires and the benefits of constant vehicle maintenance.

“There is the need to ensure safety on our roads and ensure that school bus drivers adhere strictly to road traffic rules to prevent road accidents.

“Road crashes are not mere occurrences but largely human errors and can be reduced through conscious effort by drivers adhering to traffic rules.

“All we need to do on our highways is to examine our driving attitude to steer clear of any unhealthy practices and to be promoters of road safety advocacy.’’

Solomon identified human, mechanical and environmental factors to be the three broad major causes of road traffic crashes on the highways.

He said that road crashes were not mere occurrences but due to negligence on the part of some motorist and use of expired tires.

The unit commander assured that the unit would do its best to achieve zero road crashes in the area throughout the year by engaging the support of Road Marshals.

Solomon said that there was need to properly sensitise school bus and other commercial drivers on safety rules to reduce road accidents and protect the lives of children.

“The school children are in the hands of God as well as in the hands of the school bus drivers; that is why they need to be properly orientated.

“You can be very educated and intelligent, but you can’t know all the techniques in driving, and that is why the school bus drivers need proper sensitisation on safety rules.

“Accidents do not just happen; they are caused by road users as a result of negligence and disobedience to traffic rules and regulations,’’ he said.
