Graduates must think out of box, add value – DVC

Graduates must think out the box and add value to be employable, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development Services), University of Lagos, has said.

Ogunsola made the observation in an interview with our reporter in Lagos.

“Unilag has realised it is not just about having the knowledge, but knowing how to use it to create value, wealth and jobs for national advancement.

“My office is charged with organising forums to ensure our graduates think out of the box and use their knowledge to add values to our society,’’ she said.

Ogunsola hailed the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahmon Bello, whose tenure ended on Nov. 11, for establishing the office.

It was reported that Bello, the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, was succeeded by Prof. Ołuwatoyin Ogundipe, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

According to Ogunsola, Nigeria’s labour market demands that university graduates develop skills and competences that would grow the economy.

“A country with 58 per cent youth unemployment, like Nigeria, will expect her graduates to be able to create wealth,’’ the Consultant Clinical Microbiologist said.

She noted that universities worldwide were expected to go beyond producing graduates and advance societies.

“That is why my office is helping to galvanise thinking out of the box – creating thinking to create values and affect the society in a positive way,’’ she said.

It was reported that Bello, the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, was succeeded by Prof. Ołuwatoyin Ogundipe, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
