Owing to the face of economic recession in Nigeria and mass exodus of foreign companies leaving the country, Paul Midy, Global Chief Executive Officer of Jumia Travel, Africa’s No.1 hotel booking website has said that the company is not considering leaving Nigeria but promised to help start-ups see their dreams come true.
Midy who is a 3-day working visit to Nigeria, expressed hope in the country’s current economy reality, adding that other countries have experienced moment like this in the past “but there is hope in the Nigeria market because the people are energetic and resilient and this is what is needed to bring back the weak economy”.
The CEO at a media parley in Lagos, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to providing best of services and comfort to its array of clients.
The meeting with the media was part of the activities of the CEO where he focused on ensuring mutually beneficial relationship between the organisation and the media.
Paul Midy meanwhile, noted that Nigeria, with a population of about 200 million and lots of tourist attractions is a sure destination for genuine foreign investors and tourists, adding that Jumia Travel is poised to meet their hospitality needs.
Speaking on the state of the nation’s economy and the likely effects on their business, the Managing Director, Jumia Travel (Nigeria), Kushal Dutta, who referred to himself as a Nigerian, noted that the economic recession in the country is blessing in disguise for them as immigrants now have more value for their foreign currencies due to devaluation of the naira.
Dutta pointed that prices at Jumia Travel has remained unchanged in the last one year despite the fact that there is inflation in the country.
He, therefore, advised Nigerians to stop painting a gloomy picture of the country’s current situation. He stressed the fact that booking hotel reservations through Jumia is safer, cheaper and more convenient than running into confusion trying to secure an appropriate hotel while in Nigeria.
The company’s head of Public Relations and Marketing, Kayode Kolawole had earlier explained the reasons behind the metamorphosis from Jovago to Jumia Travel, noting that the Jumia brand is a household name in the online business.
Jumia Travel is the hospitality arm of the brand, it offers the clients hotel bookings and reservations online real-time.
