Nigeria lost to experienced Argentine side - Rohr

Nigeria have appointed Gernot Rohr as their new head coach, the country’s football federation confirmed on Tuesday.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) stated that the German has signed a “two-year contract to work as technical adviser (head coach) of the Super Eagles.”

“BREAKING: Mr. Gernot Rohr signs two-year contract to work with the NFF as Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles,” the NFF announced via its Twitter account.

Rohr has described his new job as “a big challenge.”

“I am enthusiastic to get to work. This is a big challenge because Nigeria has big players everywhere and has the ability to do well internationally,” Rohr said.

NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, is excited that the federation has clinched a new gaffer for the Super Eagles, and now wants the focus to be on the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

“We are happy that this has been sealed and we can now focus on other arrangements for the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers starting in October,” said Pinnick to thenff.com.

“I have a German heart – the heart of a winner. I have confidence that with the right atmosphere and the right support, the Super Eagles have the capacity not only to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, but get to the latter stages of the competition.”

The appointment of Rohr brings to an end more than five months of vacuum in the head coach role of the Super Eagles after former Nigeria captain, Sunday Oliseh, quit the post citing breach of agreement with the football federation.

Since Oliseh’s departure, Samson Siasia and Salisu Yusuf, now chief coach of the Super Eagles, have filled the role in caretaker capacity. Frenchman Paul Le Guen turned down the Nigeria offer also.

The first assignment of 63-year-old Rohr will be a dead-rubber contest in early September against Tanzania in Nigeria in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

However, the German will have to guide Nigeria to the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia from a very difficult group which has three former African champions in Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia.
