Nigeria Stock Exchange inducts 39 new Brokers

Thirty-nine newly qualified Authorised Dealing Clerks were officially inducted into the Nigeria Stock Exchange on Monday.

The induction ceremony which took place in the event room of the Nigeria Stock Exchange, Lagos, was chaired by the Director General of NSE, Oscar Onyema.

In his opening remark, the Director-General congratulated the new inductees on the successful completion of the training programme.

He noted that there were fifty people who took part in the programme but only thirty-nine passed the oral examinations designed to test the understanding of the practical aspect of the market.

He charges the new brokers to see themselves as professionals who must maintain a high level of sincerity in the course of their practice. In his words, “yours is a call to be tall in integrity and spotless in character”.

While admonishing the inductees, the Doyen of the capital market, Alhaji Yusuf, called on them to let their words be their bond. He reiterated the fact that the profession is a respectable one and they must not bring it to disrepute.

Afterwards, a senior broker, Mr Sam Ndata performed the traditional aspect of the well-attended event when he offered prayers with items brought by the new entrants. The items include  garden egg, alligator pepper, kola-nuts, palm oil, honey water among others.

High point of the event was the transformation period when the new brokers were derobed of their blue ‘apprentice’ jackets which gave way to the maroon ‘royal’ jackets for trading on the floor. This signalled their official admission to operate in the capital market. The NSE boss performed the function with assistance from the principals of the new-comers.

The Pledge of Allegiance was administered on the inductees by the Secretary to the council, Mrs Mojisola Adeola.

Two senior Brokers, Chief Oluropo Dada and Mr Tajudeen Olayinka advised the new dealing clerks to be diligent in their operations. Chief Dada urges them to know the right time to enter and the right time to quit. While Mr Olayinka encouraged them to support capital formation and set the agenda for government’s economic policies.

Mr Francis Ilenikhena responded on behalf of the inductees. He noted that a vibrant capital market is the needed catalyst for economic transformation. He appreciated the senior colleagues and pledged that they will be good ambassadors of the stockbroking industry.

The representative of the President of Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, Mr Vincent Adubor proposed the toast to the new operators.

Dignitaries at the event include a former president of the council, Mr Dipo Williams. Other council members – Emeka Madubuike, Wole Abegunde, and Mrs Nkoli.

The programme was anchored by Mr Aggrey Otapor who cracked jokes at intervals to spice the afternoon.
