The Ogun State Government has charged transport unions operating in the State to embrace the newly introduced Welfare Insurance Policy as it would benefit and avail them the opportunity to save for the rainy days.
The General Manager, Ogun State Parks and Garages Development Board (PAGADEB), Alhaji Ayo Ola Ogunsolu, gave the charge in Abeokuta at a one-day workshop organised in conjunction with Capital Express Assurance Limited themed “Welfare Insurance and benefits to transport operators in Ogun State”.
Ogunsolu who was represented by the Director of Administration and Supplies, Mr. Lola Sotola, noted that it has become imperative for transport unions operating in the State to adopt the Welfare Insurance Policy as it would create an avenue for them to receive instant response in times of need, adding that it was an opportunity to save for the future.
“It’s imperative and pertinent for the transport unions in the State to adopt the insurance policy being introduced to them so as to save for the rainy days and in times of needs, this is crystal clear that the State Government really care for the welfare of all the transport union in the State”, Ogunsolu stated.
On his part, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP. Olumuyiwa Adejobi said that the Welfare Insurance Policy was a good omen and innovation that would enlighten the transport unions especially motorcyclists “Okada Riders” on some of the advantages of various Insurance Policies.
DSP. Adejobi urged transport unions in the State to flush out the bad eggs among them, adding that commercial motorcyclists known as Okada riders who are in the habit of putting on earrings and dreadlocks pose threat to the security of the State.
“How can you be an Okada operator having tattoos, dreadlocks, putting on tattered or rugged jeans, having earrings on as a man, it doesn’t speak well, it is even wrong traditionally and out of our cultures and costumes. In most cases, we tackle and arrest them” he said.
Earlier, the National Head of Marketing, Capital Express Assurance Limited, Mr. Mathew Ogwezhi noted that sixty naira each would be deducted daily from intending clients to avail the insurance company the opportunity to insure their clients against circumstances beyond their control, adding that transporters should at all times ensure that their vehicles are road worthy.
