Power generation: Government urged to hands off transmission

As Nigerians continue to groan in darkness over unstable power supply in the country, a stakeholder in the sector has advised the federal government to privatise electricity transmission.

Speaking in Lagos on Friday, the Director General of Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Muda Yusuf noted that government is not usually effective in running such sector.

According to him, government apparatus are not configured to run such ventures. He argued that government’s inefficiency in the business of power transmission is telling on the consumer.

The Director General however agreed that the activities of the Niger Delta Avengers is “seriously” affecting the capacity of the generating companies to generate power effectively.

He advised government to invest in expansion in the power sector and then leave it to private sector to manage. He opined that to do this will only require a suitable model of private-public partnership.

He projected a concessional agreement with private companies who have capacities and that the agreement should not be too loose to open the process to subjectivity and favouritism.

In his submission, Yusuf advised that the privatisation should be made very transparent and followed diligently towards ensuring that only companies with capacities are brought into such deals.
