Army repels Boko Haram attack in Yobe

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday warned that severe punishment awaited any soldier caught in any act of human rights violation or perpetrating illegal activities.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Chukwunedum Abraham, gave the warning while visiting 12 Field Engineering Regiment, Ilese-Ijebu in Ogun.

The army boss said such illegalities included unauthorised security duties at parties and social events, mercenary services and harassment of civilians.

He cited the example of two soldiers caught at a party recently in Ibadan, one of whom was from the 12 Field Engineering Regiment.

He said that “the affected officers will be de-robed and court-martialed”.

“You all should uphold the tenets of the army which are discipline, transparency and accountability.

“Even in the face of provocation, you must maintain a high level of discipline as expected from our members and in line with our code of conduct.

“Exemplary character is what makes the military a distinguished and organised profession and I urge you all to make worthy examples of yourselves,” the GOC said.

Abraham interacted with the Army Officers Wives Association, urging them to continue holding the home front and training God-fearing children.

In his remark, Lt. Col. Mohammed Momoh, the Commanding Officer, 12 Field Engineering Regiment, assured the GOC that the soldiers would remain professional and apolitical.

“We remain committed in our tasks against insecurity and will continue to collaborate with others to burst crimes prevalent in this region,” Momoh said.

The Commanding Officer also urged members of the public to help nip crime in the bud by reporting suspicious activities to security operatives.

The GOC, who was on a maiden visit to the formation since assuming office last November, said was on assessment visit to examine ways to improve the welfare of officers.

Newsverge reports that the GOC planted commemorative trees during the visit to the regiment.
