Snowstorm blankets New York, other U.S. cities

Residents of New York woke up to a white Tuesday as snowstorm blankets the state and the entire northeast region of the U.S.

The Correspondent of Newsverge reports that the National Weather Service said the “Winter Storm ‘Stella’ is hammering the Northeast with heavy snow, intensifying winds and accumulating ice”.

The snowstorms, which blanketed the region with sleet from Monday night, is the season’s worst snowstorm, according to the National Weather Service.

Schools and flights were cancelled while both public and commercial activities were all grounded as blizzards enveloped the U.S. busiest city that runs a 24-hour commercial, social and commercial activities.

Already, the meeting between President Donald Trump android German Chancellor Angela Merkel, billed for Tuesday, was cancelled and postponed until Friday.

No fewer than 7, 700 fights within, into and outdated of the U.S. have also been cancelled due to the inclement weather.

The Governors of New York, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Connecticut all declared a state of emergency in their respective states over the snowstorms.

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker urged people to consider working from home if they could.

“When this thing hits, it’s going to hit hard and it’s going to put a ton of snow on the ground in a hurry.

“It’s going to snow hard and fast for a long period of time. It will create whiteout conditions,” Baker said.

Virginia Governor Terence McAuliffe declared a state of emergency in the commonwealth.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday that a state of emergency would go into effect at midnight.

“A flood watch is expected to go into effect Tuesday for coastal regions in New York.

“As everybody has heard, mother nature plans on visiting us later tonight and the expectation is that she’s going to bring a wintry fury with her, which we are taking quite seriously,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo directed state agencies to begin preparing for the storm and called on residents to limit unnecessary travel on Tuesday.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy activated a statewide travel ban beginning from 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

The snowfalls came at the end of an unusually mild winter along the East Coast with below-normal snowfalls in cities such as New York and Washington D.C.

Winds were forecast to gust up to 60 miles per hour (100 km per hour) in places, with the potential to cause power outages and coastal flooding, according to the weather service.

New York and New Jersey prepared hundreds of pieces of snow equipment at the three major New York area airports.

Thousands of tonnes of salt and sand were also prepared for airports, roads, parking lots, bridges and tunnels, according to the New York governor.
