Taraba State University lacks minimum requirements of a varsity – Panel report

The visitation panel to the Taraba State University set up by governor Darius Ishaku has said poor infrastructure and lack of effective administration in the school has made the school fall below minimum standard of a University.

Chairman of the visitation panel Prof. Abba Nasir of the Moddibbo Adama University of Technology Yola disclosed this while presenting the report of the panel to governor Ishaku yesterday in Jalingo.

According to the report, the state university was without an academic planning division, research and development centre, ineffective physical planning unit, poor and ill equipped library and poor leadership in the university administration.

Other requirements lacking in the institution according to the report of the 8-man visitation panel are lack of dependable physical master plan to guide physical development in the institution and standard curriculum, even as the panel recommended a total overhaul of the bursary department to make it more effective.

While urging the governor to do something urgent to turn around the fortunes of the University in the overall interest of the state, Prof. Abba said the panel was not on a witch-hunt business as some people were speculating, but that it was normal routine practice enshrined in the laws of universities in the country whether Federal , state or private universities to reposition the system for better performance.

He described the report as a true reflection of what is needed in the state university to put it on the right track towards realising the dream of its founding fathers and the high expectations of the good people of the state.

In his response, governor Ishaku thanked the panel for the wonderful work it has done, assuring that his administration will carefully study the report with a view to implementing the recommendations of the panel to reposition the institution.

“As a lecturer myself, I am poised to revolutionise the State University to make it compete favourably with other renowned universities in the country.

“I have passion for education and I will reinvigorate the system to make state university enviable and admirable by all and sundry not only in the northeast sub-region but in the entire country,” he pledged.

He explained that the panel was setup based on his desire to have the best state owned University in the country, but regretted that some people misconceived the concept bringing up myriad of issues and unsubstantiated criticism of his action.
