Taraba workers begin 3-days warning strike over salary deductions

The organized labour in Taraba on Wednesday began a three day warning strike over alleged illegal salary deductions, omissions and non-payment of primary school teachers.

This is contained in a statement issued in Jalingo and signed by the State Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Mr. Solomon Obaje and that of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Alhaji Tukur Taji.

The Unions accused the Taraba state government of being ‘Insensitive’ to the sufferings of its workers and pensioners.

“Government has failed to address the abnormalities, ranging from underpayment of salaries, omission of genuine workers from salary voucher, removal of approved allowances and non-payment of teachers’ salaries,” the union said.

The union then directed workers in the state to proceed on a three day warning strike to warn government to take steps in ending the abnormalities or face indefinite strike action.

Further checks revealed that apart from deductions in staff salaries which has affected even political appointees of the state government, salaries in the state in the past months are usually delayed.

Our reporter revealed that there was total compliance to the directive by labour as all government offices in Jalingo the state capital were under lock and key.

When contacted, State Commissioner of Information and Strategy in the state, Barr. Anthony Danburam said labour and government team were currently meeting and that he will brief the press as soon as information about the meeting are available to him.
