As the world marks the global peace day, the Society for Peace Study and Practice (SPSP), Junior Chambers International (JCI) and security agencies in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Wednesday joined the rest of the world to mark the day.
During their separate rallies held within Abeokuta, the State capital metropolis they all called for peaceful co-existence among Nigerians in order for growth and development to take place.
Speaking to journalists at the State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Iwe-Iroyin, Abeokuta, the Vice-Chairman of SPSP, Awojuola Iyabo urged Nigerians to live in peace with one another, saying peace is an essential ingredient of growth and progress.
Her words: “Today’s World Peace Walk is to plead to Nigerians to live in peace with one another. Peace is what concerns all of us starting from our families to the society and Nigeria at large and we must ensure we peacefully co-exist among ourselves”.
The President of the JCI Abeokuta, Abiola Olorunisola said the organisation held the Walk in commemoration of the United Nations sustainable goals of ensuring peace all over the world.
He added that the walk was also to tell Nigerians that peace is possible in the Nigerian society if can co-exist with one another.
“We organised this Walk that peace is possible, we should ensure we put smiles on ourselves faces. We should do away with fight among ourselves so as we can move forward”.
Making reference to the activities of Niger/ Delta Avengers and Boko-Haram as well as other criminal activities, Olorunsola urged “We should all allow peace to reign in our midst so that we can progress and develop”.
The Head of Peace, Conflict and Resolution of NSCDC, Mr. Olusanya Olawale, in his remarks called on Nigerians to ensure they live peacefully with one another for social integration that would bring about development in the country, saying that “peace is the business of all Nigerians”.
The State Police Command’s Spokesman, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi in his short address said “It is worthy to note that peace is very paramount because without peace there is no development and what will sustain development is peace. We should ensure peace reign in our society and we should thank God for the level of peace we are experiencing in our country”.
Also speaking at the event, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Taiwo Ladiru said peace was very crucial to any nation’s development hence all Nigerians must embrace it.
