Ikorodu United fined N2m, plays 3 matches inside empty stadium

The League Management Committee of the Nigerian Professional Football League has slammed a fine of N2m on Ikorodu United FC of Lagos.

Furthermore, the club will play their next three home matches without the fans. They have equally been banished to Gateway stadium in Abeokuta for the first of the home matches in empty stadium.

This follows the fans unruly behaviour during the closing stage of their home match against 3SC of Ibadan at Onikan stadium.

The home fans stormed the field of play to disrupt the match after 3SC striker, Ajani Ibrahim equalised for the visitors in the 88th minute of the encounter.

Chinedu Onyelonu had put Ikorodu United ahead in the 25th minute and the relegation threatened club looked set to take all 3 points before Ajani’s goal two minutes from time dented their hope.

The fans immediately stormed the field beating up the match officials. Stones and other dangerous objects were hurled at the opposing supporters forcing the game to be called off abruptly.

The League Management Committee found the club guilty of poor crowd control and inadequate security as contained in the NPFL rules and regulations.

Ikorodu United are presently enmeshed in the relegation battle as they sit at the bottom of the log. This development will further threaten their survival in the league.
