Aisha Buhari donates fortified foods to 600 nursing mothers in Borno

The Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, on Wednesday, donated fortified foods and baby kits to 600 nursing mothers in Borno.

Buhari, who was represented by Hajiya YaBawa Kolo, the Director of Borno Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, said the gesture was in line with the International Women’s Day celebration.

She said “I am happy to join other global leaders to call attention and recognise the importance of this very wonderful day.

“International Women’s Day events are held worldwide on March 8, to recognise the great roles and contributions of women in economic development.

“Here in Borno, we want to use the special day to identify with our nursing mothers who are victims of violence.”

According to her, the 600 nursing mothers selected for the fortified foods and kits is to enable them to get the necessary food supplement for their children.

“The whole essence is for women not to lose their babies because of under-nutrition. The other items will also help in boosting breast milk for adequate feeding of babies.”

The president’s wife said she was collaborating with UNHCR, UNICEF, WHO, Action Against Hunger, UNDP and others to further seek support for vulnerable women, especially IDPs and other victims of violence.

She said she wanted a situation where women would get the desired attention they deserved.

Mrs Saodatou Bah-Mandate, the Protection Group Partner of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said the donation was the first phase of many more donations to come, designed to promote the rights of women and related issues.

“We are promoting three types of dialogue for women and children; protection against gender-based violence and advocacy at the national, regional and international level for empowerment and protection of women,” she said
