LABAF to makes special celebration for Fela@80 tribute

The 80th posthumous birthday of the Afrobeat legend and African culture icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, will be specially celebrated at the 20thLagos Book and Arts Festival, which holds November 5-11, 2018 at the Freedom Park, Lagos Island.

The event, titled FELA@80 TRIBUTE, is slated for Wednesday November 7th. The 6-day event is expected to parade a coterie of A-list musicians in the afro-pop genre, who will be speaking on the theme, “The Fela in me”. According to the programme directorate of the festival, ‘the tribute session seeks to engage younger musicians on the influence of Fela music on their craft.

Essentially, it is conceived to recognize the growing status of music as a tool for social, cultural and political engagements, which can be seen in the lyrical texture and performance styles of young musicians.

The Tribute session is also designed to commemorate the 80th birthday anniversary of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, creator of the global music phenomenon, Afrobeat”. The event will have Fela’s eminent son, Seun Anikulapo-Kuti as Special Guest of Honour, and will be chaired by Fela’s best friend, and first manager, Benson Idonije.

On parade in the event will be such popular artists as Daddy Showkey, Sound Sultan, Burna Boy (Idonije’s grandson and music protege), Brymo, Edaoto, Aduke, Ade Bantu, SeunOlota who all will be sharing memories, ideas and influences of Fela on their works, their craft and careers.
