Okpebholo said this while casting his vote at Ward 2 Polling Unit 1 in Udomi Primary School in Esan Central Local Government.

Speaking with our correspondent shortly after casting his vote, Okpebholo said that although the exercise was peaceful, the BVAS machines deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were causing unnecessary delay.

“Well, I just voted. You can see the frustration.

“The BVAS is just too slow. It takes too long before you can get accredited.

” I think INEC needs to look into this. So far, so good, the reports I’m getting are good,” Okpebholo said.

The governor, however, commended INEC for the peaceful conduct of the exercise.

He urged the electorate in the senatorial district to participate fully in the process and defend their votes.

“The process has been smooth here and the reports I am getting from other areas in the district are also smooth.

“INEC is doing well. I urge the voters to come out to vote and defend their votes,” Okpebholo said.

The by-election is being conducted to fill the vacant senatorial seat following Okpebholo’s emergence as Governor of Edo State.

Our correspondent reports that three students of the seminary were also reportedly abducted during the attack, which occurred at about 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Confirming the incident, the Director of Social Communications, Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, said this was the second time in 10 months that the school had come under attack.

He said the diocese strongly condemned the incident and expressed deep concern over the repeated targeting of the catholic institution, its personnel, and facilities.

“We are deeply saddened and condemn in the strongest terms this act of violence,” Egielewa said, describing the persistent attacks as troubling and unacceptable.

“This is the second time in 10 months that the school has been attacked. Ten month ago, a priest was kidnapped.

“And now three seminarians were abducted and a civil defense corps is killed, while a local vigilante sustained gun injuries.

“We call on the government to protect the lives of all those who work in catholic institution and our diocese.

“We hope the security agencies at the local, state and federal level to take up the responsibility on that, so our people can be in peace and safety,” Egielewa said.

Sen. Adams Oshiomhole (APC-Edo North) has distributed 1,200 bags of NPK 50kg fertiliser to farmers in his constituency.

Speaking while inaugurating the distribution at Iyamoh community on Wednesday, Oshiomhole said that each farmer was to get one bag of fertiliser to boost their agricultural activities.

Oshiomhole was represented by the Chairman of the Committee for the distribution of the fertiliser, Alhaji Abubakar Akokhia.

He said that each beneficiary would also receive a token amount of money for the transport of the fertilisers to their respective communities.

“The distribution of the fertilisers is aimed at cushioning the effects of hardship on farmers in Edo North.

“The idea is to boost the agricultural activities of the people of the senatorial district,” he said.

Oshiomhole said the commodity was distributed across party lines as he now represents the interest of all the constituents.

He urged the beneficiaries not to resell the fertiliser, but apply it on their crops to increase food production in the senatorial district.

“The distribution of fertiliser is to support farmers to cushion economic effects on food production,

“The fertiliser is from the Federal Government and is aimed at enhancing food security,” Oshiomhole said.

He, therefore, charged beneficiaries to enhance the efforts of the Federal Government by using the input rather than resell them.

Some of the farmers that benefited pledged to reciprocate the gesture of the Federal Government and the senator, which they described as timely for the farming season.

They assured that the impact would be felt among the populace through better yields and price reduction.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) says it will embark on industrial action, if government fails to suspend the new Scheme of Service in Nigeria Polytechnics, which took effect, June 7.

The Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State chapter of the union stated this after at an emergency congress in Auchi on Friday.

Speaking to journalists, the Chairman of ASUP, Auchi Chapter, Comrade Bamidele Osamudiamen, said that the new scheme represented a “dead-end” to the growth and development of the polytechnic education.

“Starting from Monday, we will kick start the process with a protest on the new scheme, while this will be followed with strike,” he said.

Osamudiamen reiterated that the new scheme represented a “dead-end” to career progression of lecturers in the polytechnic system.

He said that the gains recorded by the sector in recent times would be eroded by the new scheme.

According to him, the new scheme of service will further reinforce the HND-BSc dichotomy.

He condemned the document for promoting discriminatory practices favouring university degree holders over HND holders in the country.

“The unfair career progression guide in the sector, particularly as it affects the teaching and non-teaching staff cadres is a recipe for crises, as such, it is not reflective of the remuneration accruing to the cadres.

“The contentious document, curiously, unjustifiably and unacceptably elongates the career progression steps of the lecturer cadre from a 7 step to a 9 step career development cadre and at the same time added an extra year for promotion to the final two levels.

“This implies that anyone on the lecturer cadre will now endure a minimum of 26 years from the base to the highest level.

“This is not acceptable, particularly in view of the fact that this deviates from the norm in other sub-sectors and that the retirement age in the sector remains unchanged,” Osamudiamen said

The Rector of the Polytechnic Dr. Salisu Umar, backed the lecturers’ protest of the new scheme and commended the national body of polytechnic on their stand on the issue.

According to the rector, the new scheme will kill polytechnic education in the country, hence, it should be suspended.

“My challenge in all of this is the way the polytechnic is been downgraded and relegated to the background.

“For instance, it takes a maximum of 18 years for a university lecturer to become a professor; but in the polytechnic; it takes a minimum of 18 years to become a chief lecturer.

“The polytechnic lecturers are been made to play third fiddle, nor even second fiddle.

“I want to say that the new scheme of service is faulty and fraught with lots of irregularities and should be thrown away,” Umar said.

Umar said that the body of polytechnic rectors were not in tune with the provisions of the new scheme.

“We had thought the scheme was a good one until we took a critical look at the provisions,” he said..

The rector, however, urged ASUP to remain peaceful with the way they go about protesting for the suspension of the new scheme of service.

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) says only 58,000 doctors renewed their annual practice licence out of the 130,000 registered doctors in the country.

The Deputy Registrar of MDCN, Dr Victor Kolawole, disclosed this at the Induction/Oath Taking Ceremony of the
2022/2023 Batch B Medicine and Surgery graduates of the Edo State University, Uzairue, on Friday.

Kolawole said “since inception in 1963, we presently have over 130,000 registered doctors in Nigeria.

“However, as you know because of the increase in migration of doctors out of the country, we have about 58,000
doctors who renewed their annual practice licence in 2023 and they are those that are fit to practice in Nigeria.”

He frowned at the current sydrome of doctors going abroad for greener pasture and appealed to the newly medical
graduates to stay back and practice their profession in the country.

He said that “by this induction of 20 new doctors into the health workforce, we hope that other institutions will follow suit
even as the government said that the quota should be increased in all our training centres.

“However, the doctors must meet the requirements to earn those increase in quota.

“We will partner them to ensure that they met those requirements and as we try to ensure that, standard must be upheld.”

He dmonished the new medical practitioners to uphold the sanity of the profession and be law abiding, as the council is
mandated to regulate activities of practitioners as well as punish offenders.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, said the institution has facilities
to train medical personnel in the country.

Aluyor thanked Gov. Godwin Obaseki “for his unwavering support to the great university and for establishing the university
teaching hospital through the conversion of the Central Hospital, Auchi.

“This significant upgrade has enhanced facilities for the training of medical students and uplifted the standard of healthcare
services in Edo North and its environs.

“It is noteworthy that Edo State University Teaching Hospital Auchi is the first state-owned teaching hospital in Edo.

“I respectfully urge the state government to sustain efforts toward improving facilities at Edo State University Teaching
Hospital, Auchi.

Earlier, the acting Provost, College of Medical Sciences, Dr Kenneth Atoe, said 20 medical graduands from the college are
the second Batch B inductees.

Atoe advised the newly qualified medical graduates to uphold the ethical standards of a medical professional.

“You must internalise the values of honesty, integrity and selflessness.

“These virtues are not only essential for building strong doctor-patient relationship, but, are also integral to upholding
the ethical standards and trustworthiness expected of a medical professional.

“By embodying these values, doctors not only fulfil their professional obligations, but also contribute to the
maintenance of public trust in the medical profession,”Atoe said.

The students are from Idaiye’s constituency.

Our correspondent reports that the beneficiaries include students from Uma Secondary School, Imoga; Ekpese College, Lampese, Afeye Secondary Schoo, Ikiran-Ile; and Makeke Secondary Makeke.

The other schools include Okpameri Grammar School, Ibillo; Dangbala Secondary School, Dangbala; Ojirami Secondary, Ojirami; and Afe Comprehensive College, Ojirami-Afe.

Presenting letters to that effect to the schools on Wednesday, the lawmaker said that the gesture was to reduce financial burdens on the beneficiaries’ parents.

Idaiye, who is the Chief Whip at the Edo House of Assembly, also said that the gesture was borne out of concern for education of indigent students.

“This is part of my commitment to improving standard of education and to reduce the burden of SSCE fees on parents,” Idaiye said.

He urged the students to be determined, focused and devoted to their academics.

“I congratulate the beneficiaries and remind them that secondary school education is not an end in itself but a means to attaining greater heights in academics.

“I am looking forward to a day when the beneficiaries will find themselves in the midst of the world’s entrepreneurial leaders and every other sphere of life.

“Let me admonish our parents that the best education starts at home.

“We should see it as our core duty to equip our children with the right values and encourage them to embrace quality education,” he said.

Idaiye reiterated commitment to initiating policies and programmes that would have a direct bearing on the lives of the people of his constituency.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Akoko Edo LGA, Mr Tajudeen Alaide, described the gesture as highly beneficial and unprecedented in the history of the constituency.

Alaide urged the beneficiaries to be hardworking to justify the lawmaker’s investment in their education.

“I appeal to you, the beneficiaries, to reciprocate this kind gesture by excelling in your academic pursuits,” Alaide advised.

Some of the beneficiaries, who spoke to NAN, described the gesture as timely and morale boosting.

A beneficiary, Mr Ejide Taiyewo, thanked the lawmaker for the gesture and promised that the beneficiaries would not disappoint him.

Sen. Adams Oshiomhole (APC-Edo) has said that if he lost his senatorial ambition, his blood pressure would have risen to 360 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg)

Oshiomhole said this during the post inauguration/thank you party hosted in his honour by friends and well-wishers at his country home, Iyamho, Etsako, Edo, on Saturday.

“If you have voted against me, I don’t know my blood pressure will now be 240/0360 that is if I’m still alive.

“Because the jubilations by the opponent would have been such that they will come and lock my small door and break my small bones, but you said no”, Oshiomhole told his audience.

Oshiomhole said that many governors lost their in their bids to become senator, adding that it would have been a shame to him if he also lost.

He thanked the people of Edo North for voting for him as a senator, after leaving office as governor.

He also thanked the people for voting for President Bola Tinubu at the presidential election, adding that Edo-North district was the only district where Tinubu won in Edo.

He pledged his commitment to represent Edo North very well, adding that he has an obligation to ensure that the state benefited more from Tinubu administration.

“There were sitting governors who contested for Senate across the country and many of them lost. I left office seven years ago and my people still honoured me with victory, how can I thank you enough.

“Afeanmi people when you go back to your wards and units tell your people that I am very very grateful.

“During the campaign, I told you if you want to give me one vote give it to Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“I am very proud to say and to repeat today here and now that in each of these six Local Governments Areas every ward Bola Ahmed Tinubu won, every ward Adams Oshiomhole won”, he said.

“I will proudly carry the result and I will say Mr President this is my certificate of the people of Edo North that voted for you.

He assured the people that Tinubu will transform Nigeria the way he did to Lagos.

“Tinubu said those who say Edo no be Lagos will be alive when he becomes president, he will not only make Edo to be like Lagos, but better than Lagos.

“So my people those who say Edo no be Lagos, Tinubu cannot control us please tell them Tinubu is now Commander In-Chief of the Armed Forces”, he said.
