“As you embark on the next stage, be bold, innovative, and entrepreneurial. Harness your skills to drive positive change and represent Nigeria with pride,” he said.

Alausa added that Tinubu’s administration was focused on consolidating gains in the education sector, with emphasis on technical and vocational education as drivers of national development.

He disclosed that reforms include a revised curriculum scheduled for implementation in the 2025/2026 academic session,.

“It’s going to feature reduced subject loads, deeper learning approaches, and compulsory vocational training in areas such as solar photovoltaic installation and robotics,” he said.

Earlier, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr Mikhail Akinde, said the institution graduated 8,713 students, comprising 3,067 Higher National Diploma (HND) and 5,646 Ordinary National Diploma (OND) holders.

The Federal Government has opened applications for the second cohort of its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Programme aimed at expanding skills acquisition and job creation for Nigerian youth.

The Federal Ministry of Education disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Folasade Boriowo.

Boriowo quoted the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, as saying that applications for the nationwide skills development initiative commenced on April 13.

Alausa invited interested Nigerians to enrol in the programme, designed to strengthen technical capacity and address unemployment.

He said the TVET programme remained a strategic intervention focused on equipping young Nigerians with industry-relevant skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving economy.

The minister noted that the initiative aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and reflected the administration’s commitment to expanding access to skills-based education and sustainable livelihoods.

He added that the government was investing in the productive capacity of youth through practical training and recognised certification to create pathways for self-employment, innovation and long-term economic growth.

Alausa further said the ministry was collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism to strengthen training in creative and cultural trades, as part of efforts to harness opportunities in Nigeria’s creative economy.

He explained that the programme would provide six-month and one-year hands-on training in accredited centres across the 36 states and the FCT.

According to him, participants will receive a monthly stipend of N22,500 during the training period and will be awarded nationally recognised certification upon successful completion.

The training areas include construction, information and communication technology, automotive technology, creative media, agriculture, fashion and garment production, cosmetology, tourism and hospitality, catering services, and leather works.

The ministry stated that applicants must demonstrate commitment to learning practical skills and maintain full participation throughout the training period.

It added that attendance would be monitored through biometric verification systems, while stipend payments would be tied strictly to compliance with attendance requirements.

Prospective applicants were also urged to provide their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) during registration.

The ministry encouraged eligible Nigerians to apply through the official TVET portal and take advantage of the opportunity to acquire market-relevant skills for self-reliance and economic productivity.

President Bola Tinubu has hailed the remodelled Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle as a landmark investment capable of meeting global education standards.

He described the project as a transformative intervention aimed at improving access to quality public education for thousands of children in densely populated communities.

Tinubu, represented by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, spoke at the unveiling of the 36-school complex in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The President commending the Lagos State Government for prioritising education despite competing developmental demands.

He described the project as a major democratic dividend, noting it would significantly impact children, families and the broader socio-economic outlook of the community.

Tinubu said the facility, with ancillary structures and capacity for over 22,000 students, reflected commitment to education as a tool for transformation and development.

He noted that investments in large-scale educational infrastructure would help bridge inequality gaps and create opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

According to him, the Federal Government remains passionate about empowering future leaders and improving lives through access to quality, inclusive and functional education.

Tinubu said the scale and quality were impressive, adding that the complex could compare favourably with institutions across advanced nations.

He stressed that sustained investment in education remained one of the most effective strategies for securing children’s future and curbing crime.

“Opening the doors to schools is closing the doors to prison. Education remains the key to the future, and through this project, hope has been renewed,” he said.

He added that such projects would contribute to long-term national development by producing skilled, responsible and enlightened citizens.

Our correspondent reports the Tolu Schools Complex was formally commissioned amid applause from students, teachers and community members.

Earlier, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the regeneration of the complex as a bold, visionary intervention built for the 21st-century learner.

He said the project aligned with global best practices in education infrastructure and reflects a forward-thinking approach to public schooling.

Sanwo-Olu said the project was designed to create a conducive learning environment, urging students, teachers and parents to take ownership.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining the facilities to ensure their longevity and continued relevance for future generations.

He said the complex reflected sustained investment in quality public education and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to human capital development.

Mr Hakeem Smith, Chairman, Lagos State Special Committee on the Rehabilitation of Public Schools, said challenges encountered during execution were enormous, including structural, logistical and environmental constraints.

He, however, said the committee remained focused on delivering a world-class facility that meets the needs of modern teaching and learning.

Smith said the result was an inclusive, modern environment supporting both academic and extracurricular activities for students.

He added that the project underscored the state’s resolve to provide infrastructure that promotes academic excellence and social development.

Our correspondent also reports the complex, described as the largest in sub-Saharan West Africa, serves over 20,000 students across all school levels.

The facility integrates primary, junior and secondary education within a single coordinated environment designed for efficiency and accessibility.

It includes specialised blocks for physically challenged students, equipped with solar-powered lifts and accessibility features.

Other facilities include ICT hubs, science laboratories, sporting arenas, a vocational training centre, health centre and a fire station.

The design also incorporates security infrastructure, perimeter fencing and modern classrooms aimed at enhancing safety and learning outcomes.

Similarly, Akpabio represented the President at the inauguration of the Maracana Stadium in Ajegunle, featuring 19 mini football pitches, and renamed in Tinubu’s honour.

The stadium is expected to promote grassroots sports development and provide a safe recreational environment for youths in the area.

Tinubu also virtually unveiled the Fresh Food Industrial Hub in Abijo, Ibeju-Lekki, during the event, highlighting broader economic development efforts.

The hub is expected to boost food processing, create jobs and strengthen agricultural value chains within Lagos State.

Dignitaries at events included Mr Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives; Dr Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education; and Dr Jumoke Oluwole, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment.

Others were Dr Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos State Deputy Governor; Mr Idris Gobir, Deputy Governor of Sokoto State; and Mrs Josephine Piyo, Deputy Governor of Plateau.

The Federal Government has granted ₦50 million each to 45 students selected from 65 finalists from public and private tertiary institutions across the country under the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG).

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, who unveiled the initiative on Sunday at UNDP innovation Hub, Ikoyi, said the S-VCG was a bold declaration by the FG that the next wave of global innovation would be driven by the Nigerian youth.

According to Alausa, the programme represents a major shift in education policy, aiming at empowering innovation-driven Nigerian students nationwide, saying that the grant provides equity-free funding, mentorship, incubation, and digital tools.

Reaffirming government’s commitment to innovation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, he expressed that the beneficiaries would move from ideation to commercialisation, becoming job creators and driving sustainable national economic growth.

“Administered through the Federal Ministry of Education, the S-VCG is designed to identify, nurture and fund student-led startups with the potential to solve real national challenges, from agriculture and healthcare to logistics and fintech.

“Today is not just another programme event. Today, we are activating a new future and a new vision for Nigerian students. Great ideas should not die in classrooms but be nurtured into impactful solutions for our society,” he added.

He explained that the beneficiaries, who completed a rigorous three-day bootcamp and pitched their innovations before industry experts, came from institutions nationwide, selected from over 30,000 applicants across the country.

Alausa said the idea was to transform tertiary institutions from certification centres into hubs of innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development nationwide across Nigeria for sustainable growth outcomes and impact.

He described the initiative as a transformative student programme unlocking innovative potential and positioning students as job creators across the nation with emphasis on entrepreneurship and innovation growth agenda.

“The programme attracted over 30,000 applications from more than 400 tertiary institutions nationwide showing strong interest among students across Nigeria’s higher education system,

“Graduates will become job creators rather than job seekers,” he said.

This would harness Nigeria’s youth for economic transformation through innovation, entrepreneurship, and skills development across sectors nationwide.

Alausa further disclosed that the programme was designed as national intervention supporting incubation of student ideas into products and services, with real-world impact for sustainable innovation and economic development goals to be achieved.

He acknowledged partners UNDP, Google and Bank of Industry for supporting the initiative which strengthened implementation and expanded opportunities for student innovators across Nigeria and beyond significantly.

The minister urged students nationwide to leverage the opportunity, noting that successful companies often began as academic ideas that later evolved into global enterprises with innovation support and funding access.

Alausa also said that universities must move beyond teaching to become innovation hubs driving national development through research commercialisation and technology transfer for economic prosperity and societal advancement.

“There is no nation that is productive, progressive and prosperous without universities generating ideas and innovation for societal progress especially through strong academic and research systems globally recognised,” he said.

He encouraged the students to build businesses that created societal value and ensured sustainability through impactful solutions addressing real-world challenges across sectors and fostering inclusive economic development nationwide.

He also encouraged young innovators to support others as they succeed, promoting inclusive innovation for national development and ensuring knowledge sharing and collaborative ecosystem growth across institutions and sectors.

In her remarks, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, Minister of State for Education, described student entrepreneurship as critical national strategy for job creation, innovation and economic growth supporting sustainable development and youth empowerment across Nigeria in key sectors.

Ahmad said the bootcamp marked the end of an intensive programme and the beginning of a new chapter for innovators equipped with creativity, resilience and problem-solving skills globally.

She emphasised that academic knowledge alone was insufficient, urging institutions to empower students to translate ideas into enterprises and drive innovation for national development outcomes across sectors effectively.

“Student entrepreneurship represents a powerful intersection between knowledge and action.

“Moving education beyond theory to real-life problem-solving entrepreneurship initiatives within tertiary institutions are essential to transforming students,” she said.

According to her, more students are innovating and building businesses while still in school, a necessary trend for competitiveness in an evolving economy and national development.

“Student-led enterprises could drive job creation, promote innovation and support economic diversification in agriculture, technology, health and creative industries across Nigeria with long-term national benefits for development growth,” Ahmad added.

Similarly, Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, commended the Federal Ministry of Education for promoting entrepreneurship and innovation in tertiary institutions.

He described it as a shift from theoretical learning to practical, real-world problem-solving approaches in education.

Tijani urged students to focus on building sustainable solutions rather than chasing prize-winning opportunities, warning against becoming prize-per-year entrepreneurs interested more in competitions than viable, impactful businesses over time growth.

“Believe in the principle of compounding.

“Do small things consistently; they accumulate and become meaningful outcomes, creating value, driving innovation, and building inclusive sustainable impact for society and future generations,” he added.

Ms Elsie Attafuah, Resident Representative, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), gave a goodwill message.

She said that together with the United Nation, they had made a deliberate choice to remain a strong partner, working with the Nigerian government, institutions and the young innovators to move a system that delivered results and skills.

Attafuah who expressed delight in the initiative, said the government had made a great choice by investing in the talents, ideas and future of the beneficiaries,

She advised the students to see themselves as part of the growing of the national ecosystem.

“What lies ahead is not the conclusion of the journey but, the beginning of a far more demanding faith.

“One that requires refining your ideas, engaging with market, responding to feedback and continuously adapting to scale of impact.

“You have the responsibility to build solutions that matter, to create value where it is mostly needed, and to contribute significantly to the transformation to this great nation,” she added.

The Federal Government says the Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Business Incubation Certification (EIBIC) programme aims to transform Nigerian students from job seekers into job creators and driving innovation-led economic growth.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said this while unveiling the programme in Abuja on Friday.

Alausa said the initiative marked a major shift in Nigeria’s education system toward entrepreneurship, innovation and enterprise development.

Alausa described the programme as a strategic response to evolving global realities where technology continues to reshape industries and traditional employment opportunities decline.

“Today marks not just the launch of a programme, but the beginning of a new paradigm in Nigeria’s education system.

“This programme will shift our young people from passive learners to active innovators and from graduates to nation builders,” he said.

He commended universities, the National Universities Commission (NUC), TETFund, industry partners and directors of entrepreneurship centres for supporting the initiative.

According to the minister, Nigeria’s youthful population remains both a major asset and responsibility, stressing that conventional academic models alone could no longer address unemployment and employability challenges.

He explained that EIBIC was designed to embed entrepreneurship training across disciplines including engineering, medicine, law, sciences and the creative arts.

“Under the programme, students would acquire practical skills in innovation, business planning, financial literacy and venture development while still in school.

“EIBIC enables students to convert knowledge, talent and passion into viable enterprises even before graduation,” he said.

Alausa noted that the programme aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Federal Ministry of Education’s reform framework under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).

He added that the initiative would strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences (STEMM) education, promote skills acquisition, enhance industry-academia collaboration and position education as a driver of economic growth.

The minister said EIBIC would operate through a structured multi-level model, beginning with entrepreneurship exposure at 100 level, progressive skills development at intermediate stages and full business incubation, mentorship and venture creation at the final stages.

Alausa said that EIBIC had already been introduced in 14 universities in its first phase, adding that all federal universities, alongside selected federal polytechnics and colleges of education, would be onboarded by 2027.

He said full adoption across federal tertiary institutions was targeted for completion by 2028.

Alausa directed vice-chancellors of participating universities to secure Senate approval for full integration of the programme before the end of April.

He urged lecturers, industry partners and investors to actively mentor and support student innovators, while calling on students to embrace entrepreneurship opportunities with dedication and creativity.

The minister expressed optimism that the programme would accelerate Nigeria’s transition toward an innovation-led economy.

The EIBIC Subject Matter Expert, Prof. Sunday Adebisi, who is from the university of Lagos, said the initiative would strengthen the link between education and industry by providing practical skills aligned with real-world economic and business needs.

Adebisi said the programme would encourage students to transform hobbies, talents, interests and academic knowledge into viable enterprises through structured incubation pathways.

According to him, it will also provide mentorship opportunities, innovation support systems and access to funding mechanisms to help students launch sustainable businesses before graduation.

“The initiative is expected to support wealth creation by encouraging sustainable enterprises capable of generating income and expanding opportunities across communities,” he siad.

Mr Debo Olujimi, Chief Executive Officer, EMADEB Energy and Founder Ibom Upstream, pledged an investment of N200 million across universities in the six geopolitical zones to support the growth of young people.

The 14 universities to offer EIBIC programme were selected from federal universities across the six geopolitical zones of the country.

They are: University of Lagos; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Bayero University, Kano; Uthman Danfodio University, Sokoto; University of Benin; University of Port Harcourt and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Others are University of Ibadan; University of Maiduguri; Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; and University of Abuja.

The Federal Government has begun strategic reforms to address shortage of trained professionals in occupational therapy, audiology and speech therapy through the expansion of specialised university degree programmes nationwide.

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja during the inauguration of the National Committee for the Advancement of Occupational Therapy, Audiology and Speech Therapy Education (NCAOTASE).

Alausa said that Nigeria was facing increasing demand for specialised healthcare and rehabilitation services across hospitals, schools and communities, stressing that the country must urgently build capacity in the critical fields.

He noted that occupational therapy, audiology and speech therapy were essential, not only for healthcare delivery but also, for inclusive education, social integration and improved national productivity.

According to him, many Nigerian universities currently lack structured Bachelor’s degree programmes in those disciplines, while existing training opportunities remained limited and not fully aligned with global best practices.

“This gap has implications for service delivery, workforce development and our ability to meet both national and international standards,” he said.

The minister explained that the federal government’s intervention was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and broader efforts to strengthen human capital development.

He said that the initiative was also aligned with ongoing reforms under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), aimed at expanding high-impact academic programmes and producing globally-competitive graduates.

Alausa said that a newly-constituted national committee would work with the universities interested in establishing degree programmes in occupational therapy, audiology and speech therapy.

He added that the committee would guide curriculum development, accreditation processes, clinical training frameworks and faculty development requirements for the programmes.

The minister said that the committee would collaborate with Medical Rehabilitation Therapists (Registration) Board of Nigeria (MRTB) to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and international professional standards.

He further explained that the body would engage the National Universities Commission (NUC), university authorities and other stakeholders to promote sustainable funding and quality assurance for the programmes.

According to him, the committee will also review academic and infrastructural requirements for universities seeking to run the courses and develop transition pathways for diploma-trained professionals to upgrade to degree qualifications.

Alausa warned against substandard or non-clinical training pathways capable of undermining professional standards in the emerging disciplines.

He acknowledged the roles of key institutions supporting the initiative, noting that NUC would ensure programme accreditation and standardisation, while Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) would serve as the committee’s secretariat.

Responding, Chairman of the committee, Dr Victoria Amu, pledged to fast-track efforts aimed at strengthening specialised rehabilitation therapy education in the country’s universities.

Amu, also the Director, Occupational Therapist, Edo Specialist Hospital, described the assignment as a critical national responsibility, coming at a time when Nigeria urgently needed to strengthen its healthcare system.

This, she said, must be done through quality education, specialised training and professional standardisation.

According to her, occupational therapy, audiology and speech therapy are essential but under-developed areas within Nigeria’s healthcare framework in spite of their roles in rehabilitation, communication support and inclusive development.

“We are fully conscious of the urgency attached to this assignment. The gaps in training, manpower development and institutional capacity in these specialised areas must be addressed without delay,” she said.

Amu pledged that the committee would promote collaboration among members and stakeholders to achieve its mandate.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members of the committee include: Dr David Atuwo, Senior Special Adviser to Minister of Education; Dr Isa Nurudeen, Medical Director, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Kano and Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, Provost/Medical Director, Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta.

Others are: Prof. John Emaimo, Vice-Chancellor, University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo; Prof. Julius Ademokoya, Department of Special Education, University of Ibadan and Dr Paul Unufegan, Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Allied Health Sciences (FUAHSE), Enugu.

The National President, Occupational Therapists Association of Nigeria (OTAN), Ayeni Oluwasegun and officials from NUC and TETFund are also members of the committee.

This was contained in a statement by Mrs Shakirat Muritala, the Public Relations Officer of the state Ministry of Environment.

Muritala quoted the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa-Buge, as saying the sanitation exercise on Saturday will hold between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., during which vehicular and human movement will be permitted.

Musa-Buge said that the modified sanitation exercise became necessary to allow students writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) mock examination to access their centres in different parts of the state.

“I charge members of the public to utilise the opportunity of the period to clean both residential and business environments with a view to sustaining a clean and safe environment across the state.

“Waste evacuation trucks would be made available for waste collection and subsequent disposal at the approved dump site,” she said.

The Federal Government has shortlisted 65 student innovators from 30,639 applicants for the final stage of the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG).

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, and made available to our correspondent Abuja.

Boriowo said that the applicants were drawn from 404 tertiary institutions across the country, adding that it reflected the innovation and entrepreneurial potential within the Nigeria’s university system.

She quoted the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, to have described the initiative as a strategic investment in developing future innovators and job creators.

Alausa said that the performance of the shortlisted candidates demonstrated creativity and ambition, adding that the programme would strengthen a pipeline of entrepreneurs to drive economic growth.

”The quality and ambition demonstrated by these 65 student innovators is deeply encouraging. Reaching this stage represents a significant milestone, and I look forward to the next phase as these ventures are refined and prepared for scale.

“Through this initiative, we are building a strong pipeline of innovators and entrepreneurs who will drive Nigeria’s future growth,” he said.

The minister added that the S-VCG, inaugurated in December 2025 in partnership with the Bank of Industry, provided up to N50 million in equity-free funding.

According to him, the grant supports student-led ventures at the commercialisation stage to scale solutions, create jobs and boost innovation-driven development.

He revealed that the selection followed a multi-stage evaluation process, including AI-based screening and independent human validation to ensure fairness and accuracy.

He also revealed that shortlisted entries were assessed by a committee comprising representatives from government, academia, industry and the investment ecosystem.

He listed the evaluation criteria to include scalability, feasibility, founder capability and impact potential.

Alausa further revealed that the finalists would participate in a venture development bootcamp from March 26 to 29, featuring pitch sessions, workshops and investor feedback.

According to him, final grant decisions will depend on application scores, bootcamp performance and committee deliberations.

He said that beneficiaries would be announced at an awards ceremony scheduled for March 29.

He added that the initiative underscored government’s commitment to promoting innovation and supporting student entrepreneurship for national development.
