The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed, has resigned. According to The Punch, similarly, his counterpart at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Gbenga Komolafe, has stepped down.

Based on the development, President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm new chief executives for the two agencies. The President’s request was contained in separate letters to the Senate on Wednesday.

This was announced in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Both officials were appointed in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari after the enactment of the Petroleum Industry Act.

According to the statement, Tinubu “has written to the Senate, requesting expedited confirmation of Oritsemeyiwa Amanorisewo Eyesan as CEO of NUPRC and Engineer Saidu Aliyu Mohammed as CEO of NMDPRA.”

The statement noted that Eyesan, an economist and oil industry veteran, spent nearly 33 years at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and its subsidiaries. She retired in 2024 as Executive Vice President, Upstream, and previously served as Group General Manager, Corporate Planning and Strategy.

Mohammed, a chemical engineer and former Managing Director of the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company and the Nigerian Gas Company, has also served on several energy sector boardsHe recently emerged as an independent non-executive director at Seplat Energy.

“The two nominees are seasoned professionals in the oil and gas industry,” the statement noted.Ahmed’s resignation comes amid a high-profile conflict with Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, which drew national attention in December 2025.

The dispute arose from Dangote’s allegations that Ahmed and his family were living beyond their legitimate means, citing millions of dollars allegedly spent on overseas schooling for his four children.

Dangote petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to investigate and prosecute Ahmed for abuse of office and corrupt enrichment, sparking a nationwide debate over regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.

The NMDPRA chief dismissed Dangote’s claims as “wild and spurious,” insisting that he would rather defend himself before a formal investigative body than engage in public arguments.

The conflict, which traces its roots to 2024 when Ahmed criticised domestic refinery output—including Dangote’s refinery—prompted intervention by the House of Representatives, which summoned both parties to avoid destabilising the sector.

The Nigerian Afrobeats artist Adedoyin Tolulope Adepoju popularly known as BadboyTrue is set to release his first single for 2025 this December. The new single is set to be dropped on 19th of December.
BadboyTrue who was signed to “20s Melodies Ltd”, explained that, “I make music from real-life stories, emotions you can feel and situations you can relate to.

BadboyTrue explained that the new single “AWAY” is a powerful blend of emotion, rhythm, and real-life storytelling. It reflects where I’m at right now, focused, matured, and hungry for more. It was inspired by ambition, moments of love, betrayal, and self-belief. It’s a song born from real experiences, Badboytrue added.

Badboytrue further explained his previous project was an introduction to the world, one which he titled GET FAMILIAR (GF). All tracks full of emotion, reality, love, struggle, and ambition. Different chapters of my growth as an artist and as a human being.

Take my track “Free” for example. It’s about life and hustle, how we all face different battles, yet the message is simple, creating your own happiness and protecting your peace. That feeling of placing the world under your feet like a king on a solo cruise, that’s freedom.

Asking for nothing, expecting nothing, and depending on nobody? that’s a big flex. Asking if he get support from his parent, he said that, at first they weren’t, just like most African parents. But after seeing how consistent I am with my craft and the positive results, their support grew, now they fully stand behind my dream.

BadboyTrue explained what we should expect from him next year (2026). Expect visibility, better sound, deeper stories, consistency and a whole new level of energy. I’m just getting started, and trust me, the best is yet to come.

A former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, was
on Friday arraigned before an Abuja High Court sitting in
Gwarinpa by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
over alleged N2.2bn contract fraud.

Justice Maryam Hassan ordered that the former minister be
remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing
of his bail application, fixed for Monday, December 14.
Ngige pleaded not guilty to eight counts bordering on abuse of
office and acceptance of gifts from contractors of the Nigeria

Social Insurance Trust Fund while he served as its supervising
minister between September 2015 and May 2023.
After the plea, EFCC counsel, Sylvanus Tahir (SAN), applied for a
trial date and asked the court to remand the defendant.
He said,

“In view of the not guilty plea entered by the
defendant, we humbly apply for the trial date. We further pray
my Lord that the accused person be remanded at the Kuje
prison pending the commencement of the full trial.”
The defence lead counsel, Patrick Ikwueto (SAN), however,
opposed the EFCC’s submission and urged the court to grant his
client bail on health grounds, noting that the former minister
had been in EFCC custody for three days prior to the
arraignment.

He said, “The defendant has taken his plea, and your lordship is
now in full control of this trial. As I mentioned earlier, the
defendant has been in the custody of the EFCC for the past
three days, during which the charge was served on him. We can
see the charge was filed yesterday and assigned to this Court.

“The issue of whether he will be granted bail or not is a right in
our Constitution. The defendant is not an unknown person in
this country. I don’t think there is anybody in this country who

will say they don’t know the defendant. Even from the charge,
it was stated that he was a minister of this country.
“I urge your Lordship to grant the defendant bail, and we are
ready to grant any requirement your Lordship will put to grant
him bail. Even this morning, he mentioned how he needs to go
to the hospital. The prosecution is asking for his remand,
knowing fully well they don’t have the facility to cater to his
health issues at Kuje.”

He argued that the allegations were not comparable to
terrorism or treason charges that would justify denying bail.
“It’s not like he ate the ministry’s money or that of NSTIF. The
trial will start, and we will see how those contracts were
awarded. It’s not a terrorism charge or treason offence,”
Ikwueto stated.

He also challenged the EFCC’s application, saying the defence
was not given time to respond. “We were not allowed time to file our own counter-affidavit. If
the prosecution will give us time, we will.” The prosecution, however, countered him, noting that the
defendant’s alleged offence was not trivial and should not be
downplayed by the defence.

“The offences with which the defendant was charged are by no
means minute; they are rather enormous crimes that if found

guilty, he will spend nothing less than five years in prison
because of the attempt to trivialise the crime and bamboozle
the Court,” the prosecution said.

He told the court that Ngige failed to return his international
passport after he was permitted to travel for medical treatment
in October. The court adjourned the matter to December 14 and ordered
Ngige’s remand in Kuje.

Both nominees, who previously served as Minister of Aviation and Minister of
Interior, respectively, had earlier undergone full Senate screening during their
ministerial confirmations in past administrations.

After brief introductions, former ministers, ambassadors and lawmakers were
asked to “take a bow and leave,” in line with Senate tradition and citing their
earlier clearance by the Senate and their extensive public service experience.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele defended the continued use of the “take a bow
and go” procedure for certain nominees, saying it is reserved for individuals with
established and verifiable records of public service.

Bamidele explained that anyone who has previously served in the National
Assembly automatically qualifies for the privilege. He noted that their legislative history and public profile are already well known to lawmakers.

Their confirmation now awaits ratification by the full Senate.
The screening session followed President Bola Tinubu’s submission of a list of 32
ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation on November 29.

The Osun State Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, has revealed that the
recent Peoples Democratic Party convention in Ibadan delayed the state governor,
Ademola Adeleke’s public declaration for the Accord Party.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Alimi
explained that although Adeleke had already completed the paperwork for his
defection, he chose to wait until the PDP event was concluded to avoid
unnecessary controversy.

He stated, “He resigned his membership from the People’s Democratic Party on
November 4. He had actually joined the Accord Party by November 6, but he
delayed the unveiling because of the convention of the PDP, which was going on.”
Alimi added that the governor did not want to be accused of undermining the PDP
gathering.

“He didn’t want to be seen as part of the people who disrupted the event. He left
the People’s Democratic Party because the leadership crisis heightened,” he said.
Adeleke formally joined Accord on Tuesday, weeks after ending his long-standing
affiliation with the PDP, the platform on which he was elected into office.
In his resignation letter addressed to the PDP Ward 2 Chairman in Sagba
Abogunde, Ede North, Adeleke blamed worsening internal conflict for his
departure.

“Due to the current crisis of the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party with
immediate effect,” he wrote.

Alimi said Adeleke became convinced that remaining in the PDP threatened his
political future. “He left the People’s Democratic Party because the leadership crisis was
unending,” he noted.

The commissioner said the governor’s move to Accord aligns with his governance
style and policy priorities. “Yesterday, the Governor unveiled Accord because, looking at their manifesto, it goes in line with good governance that Adeleke is delivering, and everybody since
yesterday has actually welcomed him and given kudos to Governor Ademola
Adeleke for going to Accord,” Alimi said.

Despite joining Accord, Adeleke remains committed to backing President Bola
Tinubu’s re-election bid, the commissioner said. “That is no longer news for anybody. Even when we were in the People’s Democratic Party, we adopted the President [Tinubu] for a second term,” he stated.

Alimi added that Tinubu’s historical ties to Osun also make the governor’s support
natural: “When you trace the root of Mr President, you trace it to Osun state. He is one of
us, and we have to give him the necessary support.”

Adeleke’s exit adds to the growing list of high-profile members who have left the
PDP amid ongoing disputes within the party’s national structure.
The PDP currently operates under two rival national leaderships.

One faction, backed by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Governor Bala
Mohammed of Bauchi, held a convention in Ibadan following conflicting court
rulings: one approving the event and another asking that it be suspended.
Rather than resolving the party’s internal struggles, the convention further
intensified the crisis.

Calm has returned to Cotonou following a failed coup attempt in the Benin Republic on Sunday,
the United States Embassy confirmed on Monday, lifting its earlier shelter-in-place advisory for
American citizens in the country.

In a statement, the embassy said it had reassessed conditions on the ground after a turbulent 24
hours. “The US Embassy in Cotonou assesses that the situation in Cotonou is calm and has
returned to normal. We are lifting the shelter-in-place recommendation,” the statement read,
while urging American citizens to continue exercising caution, avoid crowds and demonstrations,
and maintain a low profile.

The advisory adjustment followed a dramatic series of events in which a faction of soldiers,
calling themselves the “Military Committee for Refoundation,” attempted to overthrow President
Patrice Talon.

The mutineers appeared on state television claiming they had dissolved the government and
suspended the constitution, shortly after an unsuccessful assault on the president’s heavily
guarded residence.

The soldiers briefly seized the national broadcaster to project legitimacy and rally support,
contributing to widespread uncertainty. Borders were reportedly closed, and political parties
suspended, further heightening tension across the country.

By later Sunday, Interior Minister Alassane Seidou announced that loyalist forces had regained
control of key locations in Cotonou. Officials confirmed that at least 14 soldiers involved in the
uprising were arrested, while others fled.

Two senior army officers, Chief of Army Staff Abou Issa and Army Chief Colonel Faizou Gomina, who had been taken hostage during the coup attempt, were released on Monday following government action supported by Nigerian forces.

AFP journalists in Cotonou observed a city gradually returning to normal, with traffic resuming
and roads reopening, although some military tanks remained stationed across key locations.
President Talon appeared on television later on Sunday, reassuring citizens that the situation was
“completely under control” and warning that the coup plotters would face punishment.

Military officers in Benin Republic have taken control of the federal government. A group of soldiers announced the dissolution of the government during a broadcast on Benin’s state TV on Sunday.

According to The Cable, The group, which labels itself the Military Committee for Refoundation, said the president and all political officeholders have been effectively removed.

Patrice Talon, Benin Republic president, has been on the saddle since 2016 and had promised to leave office in April 2026 after the presidential poll.

In September 2024, Djimon Tevoedjre, commander of the Republican Guard and head of Talon’s security, was arrested following an attempted coup.

Benin Republic is now the latest West African country to fall under the control of a military junta. Last month, military officers in Guinea-Bissau captured power after President Umaro Embaló, who was seeking re-election, and Fernando Dias, his main opponent, both declared victory in the country’s election even though the electoral commission had not released official results.
