The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday sentenced the former Minister of Power, Mr Saleh Mamman, to 75 years imprisonment in absentia over N33.8 billion money laundering offences.

Justice James Omotosho, who convicted Mamman in all the 12 counts preferred against him by the EFCC, ordered that the sentence shall run consecutively and not concurrently.

Justice Omotosho said that the absence of the ex-minister in court today and on the last adjourned date was a deliberate attempt to stop the wheel of justice.

The judge, who agreed with the EFCC’s lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, that though the defendant was not in court, the provisions of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015, gave the court the power to proceed with the sentencing.

The judge held that Mamman cannot claim to have suffered a miscarriage of justice.

He consequently sentenced the convict to seven years imprisonment on Counts one, two, three, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, 11 and 12 without option of fine.

Justice Omotosho also sentenced him to three year-jail term on Count 4 with an option of fine of N10 million and two years’ imprisonment on Count 5 without option of fine.

The judge, who ordered that the sentence shall run consecutively, said this shall commenced from the date of his arrest.

He, therefore, ordered all security agencies in and outside the country, including the INTERPOL, to arrest Mammn anywhere he is sighted and handed over to the Nigerian Correctional Services for his jail term.

Also based on the application by counsel for the prosecution, which was not challenged by the ex-minister’s lawyer, Mohammed Ahmed, Justice Omotosho also ordered the final forfeiture of Mamman’s two properties located in choice areas of Abuja and monies in different currencies recovered by the anti-graft agencies.

The judge further ordered that the differential amount between the monies and assets recovered from Mamman and the sum of N22 billion the prosecution was able to establish during the trial, out of the N33. 8 billion allegedly siphoned from the Zungeru and Mambilla Hydro Electric Power projects, be refunded by the convict.

Our correspondent reports that Justice Omotosho had on May 7 convicted Mamman in absentia over allegations of money laundering.

Although Mamman was conspicuously absent in court, Justice Omotosho, in the judgment, held that the EFCC had been able to establish the 12-count amended charge against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have raided three illicit drug warehouses hidden in a residential estate in Okota area of Lagos.

The operatives recovered 2,360,000 pills of high-potency tramadol 225mg and 1,909,400 bottles of codeine syrup with a combined street value N16.9 billion only.

This is contained in a statement Wednesday in Abuja by Mr Femi Babafemi, Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA.

Babafemi said that the high stakes intelligence-led coordinated operations were conducted on April 17, at 98 Olukayode Awofisayo Street, Park View Estate, Ago Palace, Okota Lagos.

He said that at the address, a large warehouse was uncovered, while two others were uncovered at 5 Charles Ndumetu Street within the same estate.

According to him, recovered from the three warehouses were 19,094 cartons containing 1,909,400 bottles of codeine syrup and 2,360,000 pills of high-potency tramadol 225mg pills in another 34 cartons.

Reacting to the development, the NDLEA Chairman, retired, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa said the successful operations had dealt a staggering blow to the heart of the pharmaceutical drug black market.

Marwa commended the operatives involved, describing the seizure as a monumental victory in the ongoing fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in the country.

According to him, the scale of this recovery, nearly 4.3 million units of lethal substances, is a testament to the fact that our officers are staying several steps ahead of these merchants of death.

”To find such volumes hidden within residential estates like Park View and busy hubs like Okota shows the desperation of these cartels, but it also highlights the peerless intelligence capabilities of our team.”

The NDLEA boss reiterated that there was no safe haven for drug traffickers in Nigeria.

He added that whether they hide their illicit goods in elite mansions or suburban warehouses, the agency’s reach was long and its resolved firm.

“Let this be a clear signal to those who think they can profit from the destruction of our children’s futures. We will find you, dismantle your networks, and bring the full weight of the law upon you,” he warned.

According to preliminary reports, operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to credible intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway. The information concerned a suspect who had been apprehended by members of a transport union while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

Police authorities stated that while efforts were underway to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in what has been described as a clear violation of established regulations. The gunfire resulted in the death of the suspect.

In response, the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to Force Headquarters in Abuja. They are expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary proceedings and possible prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served in accordance with the law. He also urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as both disciplinary and legal processes unfold.

Reaffirming its commitment to accountability, the Nigeria Police Force emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward extra-judicial actions, abuse of authority, and any conduct that undermines public trust.

The statement was issued by Anthony Okon Placid, Deputy Commissioner of Police and Force Public Relations Officer, from Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed claims that two police officers, including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ilemba-Hausa Division, were killed in a clash at Iyano, Ojo.

The clarification followed videos circulating on social media suggesting the officers were killed while attending peace talks that escalated.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, described the reports as false and misleading in a post on her X handle @AbimbolaShotayo on Tuesday.

Adebisi stated that no police officers were harmed and no civilian casualties were recorded.

“Police operatives responded promptly to the situation, and normalcy has since been restored.

“Officers continue to maintain a visible presence in the area to ensure sustained peace,” she said.

She clarified that the videos circulating online were unrelated to the incident and should not be regarded as accurate evidence.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, convicted and sentenced Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, former acting Accountant-General of the Federation (AGoF), to a 72-year jail term without an option of fine.

Justice James Omotosho, in a judgment, held that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had been able to prove the nine-count money laundering charge beyond reasonable doubt.

According to the judge, the defendant is hereby convicted as charged.

Jutsice Omotosho convicted Nwabuoku in all the nine counts and sentenced him to eight years imprisonment in each of the counts, making 72 years.

The judge, however, ordered that the counts shall run concurrently.

Justice Omotosho, who described Nwabuoku’s act of diverting funds meant for security and defence while he served as Director of Finance and Account in the Ministry of Defence as “appalling,” commended the EFCC for being detailed in its prosecution.

The judge observed that the evidence of the 9th prosecution witness that Nwabuoku voluntarily refunded part of the siphoned money of over N200 million during investigation was not controverted by the defence.

Our correspondent reports that Nwabuoku was admitted to a N500 million bail with two sureties in the like sum after he was arraigned on Jan. 15, 2025, on a nine-count amended charge.

The EFCC listed Mr Nwabuoku as the sole defendant in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/240/2024.

Nwabuoku was alleged to have perpetrated the act while serving as the Director of Finance and Accounts in the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and 2021.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John who disclosed this in a statement in Uyo, said that 18 suspects were apprehended in the process.

John said that operatives of the command on Sunday stormed the drug syndicates hideout in Oku Iboko and Mbak communities.

“These locations are active drug distribution hubs, they are also fueling criminal activities in the area,” she said.

The police image maker said that during the operation, a significant quantity of suspected illicit substances were recovered.

“Preliminary findings reveal that the hideouts were being used as distribution points for narcotics, a substance that is contributing to youth delinquency, violent crimes, and other social vices.

“Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the network and apprehend additional collaborators,” John said.

She urged those engaged in drug trafficking and related criminal enterprises to desist from such unlawful activities or face the full wrath of the law.

The police spokesman urged community leaders and other residents to support the police with credible and actionable intelligence.

“Those who choose to undermine the peace and safety of Akwa Ibom should be prepared for swift and decisive action,” she said.
