Ikeja Electric (IE) says residents and businesses across Lagos are experiencing reduced electricity supply following a nationwide drop in power generation.

Mr Kingsley Okotie, Head of Corporate Communications, IE, said this in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday in Lagos.

Okotie attributed the development to insufficient gas supply to thermal power plants, the country’s major source of electricity generation.

“The ongoing reduction in electricity supply is largely due to a nationwide drop in power generation, caused by limited gas supply to thermal power plants.

“This has significantly reduced the energy available on the national grid and, consequently, the allocation to Ikeja Electric and other distribution companies,” he said.

He noted that the shortfall had affected electricity distribution to customers, resulting in intermittent outages and load shedding across its network.

Okotie, however, assured customers of the company’s commitment to equitable and efficient distribution of the limited power available.

“The management regrets the inconvenience caused and appreciates the patience and understanding of our customers during this period.

“We remain committed to distributing the available power as efficiently and equitably as possible,” he said.

The spokesman urged customers to remain patient as efforts continued at the national level to improve gas supply and stabilise power generation.

NAN reports that the development has worsened electricity challenges in Lagos, with residents and businesses lamenting poor supply.

Some residents, who spoke in separate interviews with NAN, said the situation had increased their dependence on generators and raised operating costs.

Mrs Kemi Adebayo, a frozen food trader, said she relied heavily on generators to preserve her goods.

“I run my generator more than I use public power. If there is no light, my goods spoil. If I use fuel, I lose profit. Either way, I am losing,” she said.

Mr Sani Ibrahim, a welder, described the situation as unsustainable.

“We spend more on diesel than on raw materials. Sometimes, customers leave because we cannot deliver on time,” he said.

Also, Mrs Roseline George, a civil servant, said erratic power supply had worsened the impact of rising temperatures.

“It has been very hot, and there is no constant electricity supply. We rely on rechargeable fans and take plenty of water,” she said.

However, experts say persistent challenges, including gas supply shortages, recurring grid disturbances and sectoral debts, continue to limit electricity generation in the country.

They warn that unreliable power supply could further constrain productivity and economic growth if not urgently addressed.

Oseni, speaking during a courtesy visit by the Power Correspondents Association of Nigeria (PCAN) to the NERC headquarters in Abuja on Monday, said that power correspondents should utilise their access to information to enhance industry reporting.

He added that they should leverage this access to better educate the public.

While welcoming the collaboration offered by PCAN, he emphasised that informed media coverage was vital to securing public support for ongoing reforms within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

“Over the years, we have enjoyed a very smooth relationship with you, unlike when we first started.

“You have the responsibility to inform, not misinform, the public. We will continue to encourage you to carry out this duty diligently.

“If there is any misinformation out there, it spreads very fast and can lead to several unexpected consequences.

“But so far, we can confidently say that, following the improved relationship with you, we have seen a number of benefits,” he said.

In his remarks, PCAN Chairman Obas Esiedesa commended the commission for its improved digital transparency and proactive data sharing.

He also reaffirmed PCAN’s commitment to enhancing the depth and accuracy of reporting within the power sector

The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) PLC, has introduced a flexible debt repayment plan aimed at helping customers clear outstanding electricity bills in a more convenient and structured manner.

This is contained in a statement by the Head of Corporate Communications, Mrs Saratu Dauda-Aliyu, on Monday in Jos.

Dauda-Aliyu explained that the structured framework was designed to ease the financial burden on consumers, while encouraging a transparent settlement of accumulated debts across its franchise areas.

She also said that customers who were metered under the ongoing and past national and company-led metering initiatives, would have verified outstanding electricity debts on their accounts migrated to their newly and installed meters

According to her, this applies particularly to customers who were previously on estimated billing, had faulty or obsolete meters, or were un-metered but had accrued electricity charges before the installation of a new meter.

She said that the payment framework would provide customers the opportunity to review the outstanding balance on their electricity accounts and validate their debt profile based on available account records.

She added that the repayment structure for non-metered residential customers with a debt profile of zero Naira to N1,000,000, was N2000 monthly, while metered commercial customers with a debt profile of zero Naira to N1,000, 000 was N2,500 monthly.

She further said that for customers with a debt profile of between N1,000,000 and N2,000,000 repayment structure was N10,000 monthly, while that of customers with a debt profile ranging between N2,000,000 to N5,000,000 was N20,000 monthly.

”Similarly, customers owing between N5,000,000 to N10,000,000, are expected to pay 30 per cent of the total debt and to pay the outstanding within six months; while customers owing N10,000,000 and above, are to repay 30 per cent of the total debt and the outstanding debts within nine months,” she said.

She encouraged customers to visit the Debt Recovery Officers/Customer Service Officers stationed at any of the JEDC offices across its franchise states to review, validate, and reconcile their debt profiles.

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has attributed the worsening electricity supply across its franchise states, including Edo, to reduced power allocation from the national grid.

The company’s spokesperson, Mrs Evelyn Gbiwen, who said this in a statement on Thursday in Benin, noted that the outages and load shedding were beyond the control of the company.

She acknowledged that the supply constraints had affected households, businesses, healthcare facilities and socio-economic activities, but said the situation was not a deliberate action by the distribution company.

“The present outage and load shedding being experienced are not deliberate actions by BEDC, but a direct consequence of power allocation from the national grid,” Gbiwen said.

She explained that the company had experienced a significant reduction in electricity allocation from the national grid.

Gbiwen said this had forced the company to implement load management measures in line with service level agreements across customer bands.

According to her, the situation was not peculiar to the BEDC’s franchise areas, but reflected a nationwide supply challenge affecting electricity distribution companies.

“The current supply challenge is a national phenomenon affecting distribution companies nationwide, arising from grid constraints beyond the control of BEDC,” she said.

Gbiwen also dismissed claims that Edo was being deliberately targeted for poor supply, noting that the state historically received a substantial share of the company’s daily energy allocation.

“Contrary to insinuations in some quarters, the situation is not targeted at oppressing our esteemed customers in Edo or any part of our network.

“Historically and presently, Edo accounts for a large portion of BEDC’s total daily energy allocation,” she said.

She said the company was collaborating with relevant stakeholders to improve supply and minimise disruptions.

She added that the BEDC was intensifying its metering rollout to eliminate estimated billing and enhance transparency.

“As part of our commitment to service improvement and transparency, the company continues to intensify its metering drive to eliminate estimated billing and enhance customer confidence,” she said.

Gbiwen assured customers that the company remained committed to equitable electricity distribution, infrastructure protection and improved service delivery.

She urged for patience as efforts were continuing to mitigate the impact of the national grid constraints.

Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) says it has received 75,000 electricity meters from the Federal Government under the ongoing free metering programme, with installation already underway across its franchise states.

The Managing Director of BEDC Electricity Plc, Mr Jonathan Lawani, disclosed this at a one-day stakeholders’ engagement in Benin on Thursday.

Lawani said the company was expecting a total of 161,000 meters under the programme, covering its four franchise states of Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti.

He explained that Edo State had been allocated over 38,000 meters, distributed across BEDC’s three operational regions in the state which include Benin, Uromi and Auchi.

“We have received 75,000 meters for BEDC for the four states of Ondo, Edo, Delta and Ekiti.

“The programme will deliver 161,000 meters for BEDC. Edo State alone has been allocated over 38,000 meters.

“Out of the four states we serve, we allocated 38,000 to the three regions in Edo State, and installation is ongoing,” Lawani said.

He cautioned customers against paying for the meters or installation, stressing that they are provided free of charge under the Federal Government initiative.

Lawani also raised concern that some customers were rejecting the meters based on the misconception that metering increases electricity consumption.

The BEDC boss urged residents to report any illegal charges or irregularities and warned against electricity theft, noting that offenders would be sanctioned.

In his remarks, the Edo Commissioner for Power, Mr Paul Usenbor, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving electricity supply and establishing a meter assembly plant in the state.

Usenbor said Gov. Monday Okpebholo had prioritised the provision of reliable, round-the-clock power supply across Edo.

He noted that the stakeholders’ engagement reflected a strong commitment to infrastructure development, improved service delivery, standardised metering and faster response to customer complaints.

“The long-term goal is to ensure better power supply for citizens and public institutions.

“The long-term plan also involves increased participation of private sector partners in the state.

“His Excellency has mandated that a meter assembly plant will be set up in Edo State,” Usenbor said.

The commission said this in its third quarter report posted on its website in Abuja on Tuesday.
The report said that the figure represented an increase of 0.73 per cent compared to the 226,959 meters installed in the second quarter of 2025.

According to the report, during the quarter under review, 176,302 meters representing 77.12 per cent of the total installations were installed under the Meter Assert Provider framework.

It also said that 44,104 meters representing 25.01 per cent of the installation were installed under the Vendor Financed framework while 7,902 meters representing 3.46 per cent were installed under the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme.

”As of the end of Sept. 2025, 6,661,564 out of the total 12,030,315 active registered customers in the Nigerian Electricity Supply industry were metered,” it said.

According to the report, to safeguard customers against exploitation due to the lack of meters, the commission has continued to issue monthly energy caps for all feeders in each DisCo.

”This sets the maximum amount of energy that may be billed to an unmetered customer for the respective month based on gross energy received by the DisCo and consumption by metered customers on their respective feeders,” he said.

Some Oil and Gas marketers have called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently resolve the ongoing trade war in the downstream petroleum sector to avert further issues, especially in the international arena.

The marketers made this known, while reacting to the current war between Mr Farouk Ahmed, Authority Chief Executive, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

Our correspondent reports that Dangote had on Sunday accused Ahmed of economic sabotage, which he said was undermining domestic refining in Nigeria.

Dangote had accused the leadership of the NMDPRA of colluding with international traders and oil importers to frustrate local refining through the continued issuance of import licences for petroleum products.

Dangote claimed that Ahmed was living beyond his legitimate means, claiming that four of his children attend secondary schools in Switzerland at costs running into several millions of dollars.

He said such expenditure raised serious questions about potential conflict of interest and the integrity of regulatory oversight in the downstream petroleum sector.

On Monday, he expanded his allegations, accusing Mr Farouk of corruption and misappropriation of public funds, providing detailed figures for his children’s education abroad.

Speaking with our correspondent Alhaji Maigandi Garima, National President, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), called for a quick intervention by the Federal Government to tackle the matter.

Garima said such war was not needed in the industry as it could erode confidence being built in the sector in the international space.

He called the attention of the government for a dialogue between the parties, to have an extensive discussion towards settling the dispute.

“Such crisis is not good in the industry, and can go a long way to cause a lot of damages, especially on the global market. So quick intervention is what we call for to prevent escalation,” he said.

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) also condemned the situation and called for urgent intervention by President Bola Tinubu.

Dr Billy Gillis-Harry, PETROAN National President, who frowned at the development said it was capable of discouraging potential foreign investors and eroding confidence in Nigeria’s regulatory institutions.

Gillis-Harry said the association, at its emergency ordinary national general meeting held on Monday, had passed a vote of confidence on NMDPRA, under the leadership of its chief executive officer.

According to him, the decision followed the innovative reforms, strategic governance, and regulatory clarity introduced by the NMDPRA in the Nigerian downstream petroleum sector.

He said these reforms and interventions had significantly improved operational efficiency, transparency, and healthy competition within the industry.

He said the current regulatory framework had enhanced market discipline, encouraged fair play among operators, and created a more stable and competitive downstream environment for the benefits of consumers and the national economy.

The Group Head, Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr Emeka Ezeh, said in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu that the development was caused by gas constraints affecting the Generation Companies (GenCos).

“The development has necessitated the load shedding of available energy by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

“As a result, energy allocation to EEDC and daily service levels for customers served by its subsidiary companies – MainPower, TransPower, FirstPower, NewEra, and EastLand – have been impacted.

“Efforts are being made by key stakeholders in the electricity supply industry to address the challenge and restore normal power distribution,” he said.

Ezeh apologised for the inconvenience caused to customers, adding, “We appreciate the patience and understanding of electricity consumers across the South-East.”

Anglo Asian Mining PLC, the AIM-listed gold, copper, and silver producer focused in Azerbaijan, has announced the successful installation and operation of two new larger filter presses and an associated thickener at its Gedabek flotation plant.

The upgrade, according to a report from Global Mining Review, sourced from Yon Proses & Filtrasyon Teknoloji in Türkiye at a cost of US$0.5 million, aims to increase future copper production by processing higher-grade ore from the new Gilar mine. The company has also procured Imhoflot Pneumatic cells, with a contract signed for US$1.6 million for installation, expected to enhance metal recovery ¹ ².

The recent modifications have already yielded positive results, with November marking a record month for copper production at Gedabek, totaling 688 tonnes. The company currently has a stockpile of 53,190 tonnes of Gilar ore containing 1.8 g/t of gold and 3.58% copper, which will be processed next year through the expanded plant ¹.

“These upgrades enable us to efficiently process ore variability, particularly valuable considering global copper demand,” said Stephen Westhead, Vice President of Anglo Asian. The company looks forward to continuing its growth strategy, with construction work on the flotation plant expansion set to commence early in 2026

Ikeja Electric says it is fully cooperating with regulators to resolve concerns raised by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), which on Thursday sealed its headquarters over alleged consumer-rights violations.

Speaking with our correspondent Mr Kingsley Okotie, Head of Corporate Communications, Ikeja Electric, said the company is engaging all stakeholders to implement the directives issued by regulators.

Okotie said, “We, as a responsible and law-abiding company, are fully engaging and cooperating with the FCCPC to resolve the issue in the best interest of all stakeholders.

“Just like the FCCPC and other regulatory authorities in our sector, Ikeja Electric remains committed to upholding and protecting the rights of our customers.

“We are engaging with the FCCPC alongside the affected customer and other concerned stakeholders to implement all directives issued.

“We kindly seek the Commission’s understanding to unseal the premises and restore normal operations.”

Our correspondent reports that FCCPC officials sealed the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC) headquarters in the Alausa area of Lagos over alleged failure to comply with a Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) directive.

According to the Commission, NERC had ordered Ikeja Electric to unbundle a Maximum Demand (MD) account into 20 separate non-MD accounts representing nineteen residential units and a service point owned by a complainant, and to meter and connect each unit appropriately.

Mrs Idayat Olorungbe, who represented the Director of Surveillance and Investigation, Mrs Bola Adeyinka, said the action followed several unsuccessful attempts to secure compliance.

She said the prolonged refusal left the complainant without power supply for over 2.5 years, rendering the nineteen residential units unusable despite the customer fulfilling all financial obligations.

Olorungbe said FCCPC engaged the company for months, issuing a detailed compliance directive in April 2025. When no steps were taken, a Compliance Notice was issued on Oct. 2, 2025, with a seven-day ultimatum, also ignored.

She stressed that the enforcement was backed by Sections 17, 18, 124, 150 and 155 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, which empower the Commission to intervene and seal premises where violations persist.

“This is a proportionate enforcement measure taken only after repeated engagement and several opportunities for voluntary compliance.

“The seal will remain until Ikeja Electric fully complies with the directives issued by both NERC and the FCCPC and provides written evidence of compliance,” she said.

FCCPC reiterated that consumers are entitled to fair treatment, access to essential services and protection from unfair, coercive or negligent practices by service providers.

“The Commission will continue to enforce the law to protect these rights and ensure that service providers meet their obligations,” Olorungbe added.
