Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau has lauded the support being given to the Candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Prof. Nora Daduut for the bye-elections of Plateau South Senatorial District.

Lalong acknowledged the support during a fundraising dinner, organised by the campaign council of the candidate, on Sunday in Jos.

Our correspondent reports that the election is scheduled to hold on Oct. 31st.

He said that the support from the party members and well-wishers was an indication of the confidence they have on her capacity to represent the people well.

“Women are always coming with blessings.

“With your aspiration, the party chairman told me that we have a very big delegation of people who have moved from their party to ours.

“We will formally receive them into the party; the National Chairman of APC wants to receive them.

“I commend the chairman for being active to achieve that.

“Soon APC will be the only party in Plateau,’’ he said.

Earlier in his remarks, the Director-General of the campaign council, Sen. Victor Lar, said that the noble aspiration of producing the first female senator in Plateau would be historic.

He explained that the dynamics of contesting elections involved huge financial resources, adding that the fundraising was required to make the party successful at the polls.

Also speaking, the APC chairman in Plateau, Chief Latep Dabong, said that the fundraising was part of the requirements of the electoral act to raise funds for elections.

He appealed for support, either in cash or in-kind, for the party’s success at the polls.

“You can give face masks, counsel, anything that can make the journey successful,’’ he said.

Responding, the party’s candidate, Daduut thanked the party and well-wishers for supporting her.

She pledged not to disappoint the party if victorious.

It was also reported that more than N100 million was realised at the fundraising.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the final list of nominated candidates for Ondo State Governorship election scheduled for Oct. 10.

Mr Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC, made the disclosure in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Okoye said that the list was published at INEC State and Local Government offices in Ondo State, adding that it was also available on the commission’s website and social media platforms.

He noted that as at at 6 pm on Aug. 18, which was the deadline for the withdrawal and substitution of candidates, only four political parties substituted their earlier nominated candidates.

He noted that the commission held its weekly regular meeting on Thursday and deliberated on the conduct of the Ondo governorship election scheduled as well as other outstanding elections.

“It will be recalled that on July 31, the Commission published the provisional list of candidates for the Ondo governorship election comprising 17 political parties.

“In accordance with Section 35 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) and as provided in the timetable and schedule of activities released on Feb. 6, withdrawal and substitution of candidates ended at 6 pm on Aug. 18.

“Four political parties that earlier made valid nominations have substituted their candidates.

“The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Democratic Party (ADP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew and substituted their Deputy Governorship candidates, while the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) substituted both its governorship and deputy governorship candidates.

“Consequently, the Commission has published the final list of nominated candidates in our State and Local Government offices in Ondo State. The list is also available on our website and social media platforms,” he said.

Okoye advised political parties, candidates in the election and members of the public to check the final list of candidates and be guided accordingly.

A member of the House of Representatives, Dr Tony Nwoye, has emerged the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Nov.18 governorship election in Anambra.

Nwoye, who represents Anambra East and Anambra West Constituency, polled 2146 votes to defeat his closest rival, Sen. Andy Uba, who scored 931 votes in the party’s primary election conducted on Saturday.

The result of the contest was announced by Chairman of the APC Governorship Primary Election for Anambra, Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno, on Sunday, at Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka.

The election started on Saturday and extended to about 4.10 p.m. on Sunday when the result was announced by Shettima after a long period of collation of ballots.

Breakdown of the result of the exercise as announced by Shettime showed that Chief George Muoghalu scored 525 votes to place third, while Ms Adaobi Uchegbu, the only female aspirant, scored one vote.

He said that total votes cast were 4,332, out of which 4,302 votes were valid and 31votes were invalid, adding that the total figure tallied with the number of ballot papers brought by the committee for the election.

Shettima described the election, which was contested by 12 aspirants as “very tedious”, but the “easiest” he had ever taken part in.

“It was an easy one for us as an umpire because none of the members of the committee has personal interest and that was why we did our best to make the election free, fair and credible,” he said.

Shettima said that the committee did everything possible to resist overtures from aspirants which would have adversely affected the outcome of the primary.

He commended the security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their roles in ensuring that the exercise was successful.

“I must thank the security agencies, especially the Commissioner of Police and state’s Director of Department of State Service (DSS),’’ he said.

While presenting a copy of the election result to Nwoye, Shettima urged him to do everything to ensure that APC won the Nov.18 governorship poll.

In his acceptance speech, Nwoye described the process that led to his emergence as “thorough” and promised to led the party to victory.

Nwoye, a medical doctor and former President of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), was born on Sept. 13, 1974.

He studied medicine at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and at the Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.

The APC candidate hails from Nsugbe in Anambra East Local Government Area, the same area with incumbent governor of the state, Chief Willie Obiano.

He is a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra and its governorship candidate in the 2013 election.

Nwoye won the election to the National Assembly in 2015 on the platform of PDP.
