A Nigerian company, E.F. Network Ltd, has developed a mobile application that can make a device unusable by thieves, to curb theft or resale of mobile phones and other gadgets in the country.

Mr Ameh Ochojila, the company’s public relations officer said this in a statement on Tuesday, in Abuja.

Ochojila, said that the application named ‘ephonetaxi’ will help provide solution to the growing number of stolen phones in the country and across the globe.

“The application ‘ephonetaxi’ helps to lock out anyone who is unauthorised to use the phone, making it unusable and unsellable,” he said.

According to him, the application is designed to protect phone owners and the information stored on their phones from being compromised in the event of a phone theft.

“The application helps retrieve and send the user’s stored contents to his email.

“It also locks the phone, prevents either unauthorised access to stored pictures, videos, messages, or contacts of the phone owner.

“The app alerts the phone owner of any change in SIM card, monitors, and tracks the phone location including taking pictures of criminals in possession of the phone and sending the pictures to the email address of the owner,” he said.

Ochojila added: “The owner can do all these remotely in spite of the phone being lost or stolen.

“Once a phone is locked remotely by the owner, buying it will be a mere waste of money.”

The technical manager of the company, Mr Kelvin Raymond said that the application could also be used to trace kidnappers as it can reveal real-time location of mobile phones.

Mr Gideon Egbuchulam, Chairman of the company said that the application was one of the application lined up by the company to meet technical and software needs of Nigerians.

Egbuchulam said that the company had opened an incubation centre in Abuja where he planned to recruit brilliant young Nigerian Information Technology (IT) professionals.

“Given enabling environment, Nigerian youths will take Nigeria to the next Silicon Valley in Africa.

“Almost all giant tech companies in the world are interested in the Nigerian market and that is the reason our company is recruiting over 1000 people by the end of 2020 to support talented youths,” he said.

Our correspondent reports that available data showed that in 2016 alone, over 400,000 phones were stolen in the UK, with a good number of them shipped abroad for resale.

The data also showed that many of the stolen phones were first sold to criminal gangs who tried to access them for information that could be used to hack bank accounts of their owners, before selling them to end users.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it has blacklisted Mars Remedies PVT Limited, India, for manufacturing falsified medicine for a pharmaceutical company in Nigeria.

This is contained in a statement signed by the agency’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye on Tuesday in Abuja.

The Director-General said that the agency also delisted Ciprofloxacin tablets BP 500mg with (NAFDAC Reg. No. C4-0498) which was manufactured for Pinnacle Health Pharmaceutical, Surulere, Lagos.

According to Adeyeye, in view of the unprofessional practice, all products manufactured by Mars Remedies PVT, 635, GIDC Estate Waghodia Vadodara, Gujurat, India, will not be allowed into Nigeria with immediate effect.

She said that a letter addressed to the Managing Director of Mars Remedies PVT Limited titled
“Notice of blacklisting as a manufacturer of substandard and falsified medicines” reiterated the agency’s position for zero tolerance for substandard.

Adeyeye said that the stand was in fulfilment of the regulatory obligation of the agency to safeguard the health of the nation.

“In violation of NAFDAC extant laws and regulations, the company illegally manufactured different formulations of Ciprofloxacin tablets instead of the approved formulation for export to Nigeria.

“The variation in the formulation of the Ciprofloxacin 500mg tablets, which may impact on the product quality and shelf –life, was not approved by the agency before the changes were made.

“This constitutes a violation of the NAFDAC Act.

“The company has displayed a flagrant disregard for compliance with global standards necessary to assure the production of quality assured products.

“Therefore the company has been blacklisted accordingly,” she stressed.

Adeyeye, therefore warned all manufacturers and importers of medicines to adhere strictly to the conditions for which their products were registered by NAFDAC or face similar sanctions.

“Talent development and execution of robust succession planning is central to actualising our Big Hairy and Audacious Goal (BHAG) – To be the No 2 Pharmaceutical company in Africa by 2035.”

Adeosun thanked all who contributed to the success of the company since it commenced business in 2018.

Also, there was the presentation of the ST.RACHEAL’S Pharma’s 2020 Leadership Excellence Awards to healthcare service providers.

The First Lady of Oyo State, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde, presented the awards, assisted by the Chairman and CEO of ST.RACHEAL’S Pharma.

The awardees included the CEOs of Reddington Hospital, Lagos, Dr Adeyemi Onabowale; Mrs Bukky George, HealthPlus Pharmacy Nigeria and Dr Franca Ikimalo of Prime Medical Consultants, Port Harcourt.

Adeosun thanked the awardees for partnering with ST.RACHEAL’S Pharma in raising the bar of healthcare services in Nigeria.

Earlier, the Deputy Governor of Rivers, Dr Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, had called on stakeholders and experts in different fields to collaborate to address the nation’s health, infrastructure, food security and economic indices.

Banigo, who participated virtually, spoke on the anniversary theme: “ Improving Life Expectancy in Nigeria’’ and listed several factors responsible for the short life span of most Nigerians.

According to her, they include social problems, infrastructure problems, poor and inadequate potable water supply, poor state of roads, poor housing and rental challenges and other economic variable.

Also included are inequitable distribution of income and high level of unemployment.

“Other factors are stress — ranging from students’ schools fees, house rent, electricity bills, medical bills, generators and parts repairs, powering and fueling, feeding the family, and clothing of families.

“Also is the huge numbers of demands, siblings demands, vigilance bills, work stress, police stress on the road, variable stress, kidnapper’s fear, armed robbery fears, all adding to our low rate of life expectancy.”

She, however, recommended that for Nigeria to improve on its life expectancy, there was an urgent need for collaboration by all sectors to improve the conditions.

She added that “government has a critical role to create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive and ensure the sustainability of the ease of doing business in all sectors of the economy.

“It must address the numerous challenges breaking the health sector in terms of facility, equipment, manpower, and also curtailing preventable and avoidable diseases.

“Government needs to improve on budgetary allocations to the health sector and take measures to control population growth.

“The media is also very key to changing the narrative. The media must work toward bringing areas of concern into limelight and for public appraisal.
