A former Lagos lawmaker, Ipoola Omisore, has appealed to Lagos and Ogun state governments to repair the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to end the people’s nightmares.

Omisore, who represented Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency II in Lagos State House of Assembly from 2015 to 2019, made the appeal in an interview with our reporter on Friday in Lagos.

“We are aware it is a federal government project and even when I was in Lagos Assembly, I was on the issue for years, but the government refused to pay the contractors and for that reason, that road has been there.

“That road is a shame to Lagos and Ogun and to the federal government.

“It is already causing hardship and disturbing the commercial activities of both states.

“So, if the federal government is not ready, we want to appeal to both states to assist and do it and claim their money.

“I think it is needless waiting for federal government on that road,” the former lawmaker said.

According to him, years back, the state used to do certain roads belonging to the federal government and claim their money later.

“We have been waiting for government for seven years on that road, nothing has been done,” he noted.

It was reported that the road, linking Lagos State with Ogun, has been in a deplorable condition.

The skeletal repair ongoing on the corridor between Kola Bus Stop in Lagos and Toll Gate in Ogun was moving at snail speed.

Some youths in Epe Division of Lagos State have turned the Epe/Ibeju-Lekki expressway to a football field and other games, but have effectively blocked the highway to denied vehicular movement as the EndSars protest continues.

Our correspondent reports that the youths, who spoke in separate interviews on Monday, in Epe, said that their action is to end the operation of SARS across the nation through a peaceful protest.

It was reported that the protest started on Oct. 8 with protesters taking to the streets in different parts of the country, calling for a reform of the Police Force and disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for alleged brutality to citizens.

Mr Ibrahim Olawale, Youth Leader, said that the purpose of the protest is to join voices with other masses across the country to EndSars and bad governance.

“Enough of bad governance, enough of Sars brutality and enough of bad leadership/corruption, ” he said.

Olawale added that the protest was not just to Police brutality or total reformation of police force but also to fix the entire system of the economy.

“Nothing seems to be working in Nigeria, Our Judiciary, Executive and Legislative arms of government are all faulty.

“We need a total reform in all systems of government and infrastructure needs to be put in place for all to enjoy dividend of democracy,” he said.

Olawale urged the Lagos state government to fix the Epe/Ibeju Lekki, Epe/Ikorodu and Epe/Ijebu-Ode expressways.

“Epe is a multi link road community that leads to Ogun state and other parts of the country, so it deserves a good road network,” he said.

He added that the issue of land grabbers in Epe Division needs urgent attention of the government.

“This is a germaine issue that is affecting the landowners in the community and this needs government’s quick interventions.

“The only way we all can enjoy from government is for them to provide us with adequate infrastructure, enforce law and ensure that the system of government are favorable to all citizens,” he said.

Mr Afeez Lawal, a civil servant, said that the protest was peaceful and the youth have taken the “bull by the horn” by demanding for their rights.

Also, Mr Jubril Idris, a youth, said that the protest was not to disrupt commercial activities in the community but to express their heartfelt concerns on the EndSars matter and other issues affecting the citizens.

“We are patriotic youth, we are civil and we know our right, this is the best avenue to demand for our right,” he said.

Idris therefore, urged the federal government to yield to the plea of the masses and reform the entire police system and fix the entire system.

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Setonji David has urged the Federal Government not to pay a lip service to the reconstruction of Lagos-Badagry Expressway, decrying the work pace.

David, representing Badagry Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, made the appeal in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday in Lagos.

According to him, though the project has been approved by the Federal Government, the snail pace at which the work is going will elongate the sufferings and the agonies of the residents of the area.

“We are going through hell on Lagos-Badagry Expressway. Nobody wants to ply the road again. The journey from Mile 2 to Badagry in the 80s and early 2000 was just 30 minutes maximum, but now we spend 5 hours.

“It seems the Federal Government is paying lip service to the plights of Nigerians in this area otherwise, the contractor would have been well mobilised for serious work.

“Our people are really suffering. Sometimes, I wonder whether Badagry has been abandoned in the state by the Federal Government. I left my home in Badagry at 5:00a.m. and I could not get to Lagos until 10:a.m.

“I spent hours from Badagry to Lagos this morning in a journey that should have taken me ordinarily 30 minutes and at worst 40 minutes to get to Lagos.

“The road is in terrible shape, extremely bad as if the people of Badagry have done something wrong to belong to Nigeria,” David, the Chairman, House Committee on Home Affairs, said.

According to him, though the Federal Government had awarded contracts for some sections of the road, the snail pace at which the work was going would make the residents suffer for many years.

David said that the section from Okokomaiko to Agbara, given to the Federal Road Maintenance Agency to fix, was not making at any appreciable progress, “this is going at a very slow pace”.

“The way they (FERMA) are going, that project will not be completed in five to six years. That means our suffering continues,” David said.

He added that the section from Agbara to Seme border, also approved by the Federal Government might not be completed in many years to come.

According to him, as a representative of the people, my finding showed that the contractor was not well mobilised to commence serious job.

“I learnt that project was awarded for about N36 billion and the contractor was paid N1 billion for a year, that means in another 36 years, that project will not be completed.

“It is like Federal Government has abandoned us in Badagry. Federal Government needs to come and do something urgently. We don’t know why Badagry should be neglected.

“The contractors should be paid and monitored to expedite action on the road. The pace of work must be increased because as we speak, it is extremely slow.

According to him, the corridor is vital to the nation’s economic development because it leads to other West African countries such as Republic of Benin, Ghana, Togo and others.

The lawmaker decried the condition of the road, saying immediately after leaving Nigeria; motorists enjoy good roads in other neighbouring African countries.

He said that the road had totally failed and there was nothing to be maintained except carryout outright reconstruction.

David said: “We are suffering and the impression residents have is that they have been abandoned in Badagry.

“The economic activities have completely been eroded. Who will do business in that kind of environment? We call on the Federal Government to do something to alleviate the suffering of our people.

“No business can thrive in that kind of environment. Things that ordinarily cost N100 in Lagos is being sold at N200 in Badagry because of the bad road.”

Recall that the road had been divided into three sections. The first phase from Eric Moore in Lagos to Okokomaiko (Channel zero to 20) is being handled by the Lagos State Government.

The second phase – Kilometre 20 to 32 (Okokomaiko- Agbara) is being undertaken by FERMA while the Federal Ministry of Works is to handle the largest chunk of the project from Agbara (kilometre 32) up to Seme Border.

The Federal Government through the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) on June 19 flagged-off repair and maintenance works on part of the Lagos-Badagry expressway.
