Coronavirus tests conducted at the team have proven positive for Salah, although he does not display any symptoms for the virus, EFA said on its twitter account.

The other players of the team have tested negative for the virus, EFA added.

The 28-year-old striker is currently in Egypt originally to participate in the national squad’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Togo scheduled for Saturday.

Gomez sustained the injury during a training session with England on Wednesday and was withdrawn from the squad before Thursday’s friendly against Ireland.

Liverpool said in a statement that Gomez had undergone surgery to repair a tendon in his left knee, with “no damage to any other associated knee ligaments”.

The match’s two goals, a Mohamed Salah penalty kick for Liverpool and a fine turn and finish from Gabriel Jesus for Manchester City, came in a pulsating opening 45 minutes.

The goals, as well as the missed penalty kick, were part of a half in which the last two league champions produced some exciting football.

But the quality and entertainment faded badly after the break.

Yet the excitement of the opening 45 minutes was not replicated after the break as Manchester City gained greater control but struggled to create real openings.

Ederson did well to save from Diogo Jota at the near post and at the other end Jesus was off-target after being found unmarked in the box by Joao Cancelo.

Then Dreyer had the best chance of the game when he jinked into space in the Liverpool penalty box but, with Alisson to beat, he could only find the side-netting.

Salah made sure of the win, in stoppage time, from the penalty kick spot, converting after he had been brought down by Paulinho inside the box.

The Dutch defender was injured in Saturday’s Merseyside derby draw against Everton.

He was substituted early in the game when Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a reckless challenge in the box, which left Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp fuming.

“Liverpool can confirm Virgil Van Dijk will undergo surgery on the knee injury he sustained during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Everton,” the club said in a statement.

“The centre-back damaged knee ligaments following an incident involving Blues goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after six minutes at Goodison Park.”

The club did not specify a timescale for the 29-year-old defender’s return to action.

However, cruciate ligament injuries normally take months to recover from.

In May, football’s rule-making body IFAB changed the regulations governing the maximum number of substitutes.

This was to help teams battling fixture congestion as they looked to complete the season after a three-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

IFAB left it to individual leagues to decide if they wanted to adopt the rule this season and Premier League clubs voted at their annual general meeting last month against continuing to allow the use of five substitutes in each game.

“I thought from a common sense point of view it would be clear we will have 20 (players in the squad) and five (substitutes),” Klopp told reporters. “It’s not an advantage. I don’t like that. We deal with this thing around the wrong facts.

“It’s about players’ welfare and the highest quality in games for all teams…

“Look at the other countries, Bayern (Munich) have the best team and have an advantage with the five subs (in the Bundesliga), but they play the most games.

“Now it is 18 (in the squad) and three (substitutes). So, you have to rotate more. You need numbers and fit players. That’s the job we have to do. We have to make the decisions.”

Champions Liverpool host second tier title holders Leeds United in their first match of the new campaign on Saturday and Klopp expects Marcelo Bielsa’s side to thrive in the top flight.

“It’s not the most expansive style where they will open up. They are well-drilled and the way they defend is exceptional — pretty much man-marking plus one,” Klopp said.

“They will face challenges because… some different animals are around than in the Championship (second tier).

“But they will do well in the Premier League. It suits them more than the Championship and now they can show their full potential.”
