Paris St-Germain (PSG) reached their first ever UEFA Champions League final with a 3-0 win over RB Leipzig on Tuesday, inspired by Argentine Angel Di Maria.

Goals from Marquinhos and Di Maria put PSG 2-0 up at the interval.

Juan Bernat added the third in the 56th minute for what was a comfortable victory at the Estadio da Luz.

The French club, who are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their founding in 1970, will meet winners of Wednesday’s other semi-final between Bayern Munich and Olympique Lyonnais.

The big-spending PSG were a step too far for Leipzig, who were playing in the regional leagues just 11 years ago.

The German side have outperformed all expectations by reaching the last four, knocking out Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid en route.

“We ate them up from minute one —— it’s going to be tough to sleep between now and the final,” said Di Maria.

“We worked hard all game and we showed we deserve to be here. It doesn’t matter who we face: either Bayern Munich or Lyon, we’ll give our all,” he added.

French World Cup-winning forward Kylian Mbappe was back in the starting line-up after fully recovering from his ankle injury.

PSG’s German coach Thomas Tuchel was then able to field his preferred attacking trident with Brazilian Neymar and Di Maria.

Right from the outset, PSG looked a threat to the Leipzig defence with Neymar clipping the post after he was slipped in by Mbappe in the sixth minute.

Seven minutes later though, PSG had the lead.

Neymar and Di Maria lined up to take a free kick on the left and it was the Argentine who floated in a lovely cross which was nodded home by Marquinhos.

Former Real Madrid and Manchester United winger Di Maria was in fine form, constantly probing, while Neymar created from deep and Mbappe pushed on to the last defender looking to use his pace.

The Germans were struggling but did threaten in the 25th minute, when Konrad Laimer burst down the right and found forward Yussuf Poulsen whose shot was just off target.

Neymar then went close with an audacious free-kick from deep and wide on the right, after the former FC Barcelona man went for Peter Gulacsi’s near post and struck it as the Hungarian goalkeeper scrambled.

It was a poor clearance from the goalkeeper which led to PSG’s second.

Leandro Paredes collected the ball and then found Neymar who cleverly flicked it with the back of his heel into the path of Di Maria who made no mistake.

Leipzig’s 33-year-old coach Julian Nagelsmann needed to find some way to shift the momentum of the game, and he made two changes at the break.

But after a bright start, PSG put the outcome beyond doubt.

Leipzig defender Nordi Mukiele slipped while attempting to clear, allowing Di Maria to cross the ball back in to the box and Bernat’s glancing header floated into the far corner.

Mbappe forced a good save out of Gulacsi as PSG pushed for a fourth while PSG goalkeeper Sergio Rico had his hands warmed by a fierce drive from fellow Spaniard Angelino.

The French club have played 110 games in the competition —— the most played by a side before reaching their first final, overtaking Arsenal’s record of 90 between 1971 and 2006.

PSG’s only other appearances in the final of a European competition came with their UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup victory in 1996 and their runners-up spot in the following season.

Olympique Marseille are the only French team to win the European Cup, triumphing over AC Milan in 1993.

Lionel Messi highlighted the match with his first appearance of the season for the Spaniards.

Barca’s in-form 16-year-old Ansu Fati became the club’s youngest player to feature in a UEFA competition when he started.

However, he failed to make any real impact before being replaced by fit-again Messi just before the hour mark.

Even after the Argentine took to the field it was the Germans who were more dangerous, with captain Marco Reus’ 57th minute penalty saved by Marc Andre ter Stegen.

Julian Brandt also rattled the crossbar with a thundering shot in the 77th.

In the group’s other game Inter Milan were held to a 1-1 home draw by Slavia Prague.

Manchester City and Manchester United will not play their home games in next month’s UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on the same or consecutive nights, UEFA said on Thursday.

European football’s governing body said, ahead of Friday’s draw, that this was as a result of a decision by local authorities.

It said it would amend the scheduling if both Manchester clubs are drawn to play their home games in the same week.

UEFA said Manchester United, who finished below champions Manchester City in the English Premier League last season, would have their fixture reversed.

The quarter-final first leg matches will be played on April 9 and April 10 with the return legs scheduled for April 16 and April 17.

“Following a decision made by relevant local authorities, Manchester City and Manchester United cannot play at home on the same night, nor on consecutive nights,” UEFA said.

“Should both clubs be drawn within the same sequence (home or away), the team having finished lower in the domestic league the previous season — in this case United — will be reversed in accordance with the UEFA Club Competitions Committee principles.

“In accordance with paragraph 21.01(b) of the UEFA Champions League regulations, the UEFA administration will determine which matches will be played on Tuesday, which matches on Wednesday.”

UEFA said that the same rule would apply should both teams advance to the semi-finals.

There is also the possibility that derby rivals Manchester United and Manchester City could face each other in the quarter-finals.

They may even have to take on fellow English Premier League (EPL) sides Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester City’s record home win in Europe did not look likely after a quiet opening 35 minutes.

But once Sergio Aguero began the rout from the penalty kick spot it became embarrassingly easy as Manchester City reached the last eight for the third time in four years.

Aguero doubled Manchester City’s lead three minutes later and the impressive Leroy Sane made it 3-0 before halftime.

Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva finished off flowing moves after the break and youngster Phil Foden bagged his first European goal before Gabriel Jesus made it seven.

Manchester City, who trailed 2-1 in the away leg before turning it around late on, join Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals.

Liverpool, another English Premier League side in the tournament, will be in action against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Ronaldo stole the show with two headers and a late penalty kick on an ecstatic night for the Turin side.

With Atletico Madrid packing their defence, Ronaldo made the crucial breakthrough in the 27th minute when he rose to head in Federico Bernardeschi’s cross at the far post.

The 34-year-old levelled the aggregate scores in the last-16 clash three minutes after halftime with another towering header, this time from Joao Cancelo’s cross.

With four minutes left, Bernardeschi powered into the Atletico area, and was pushed in the back by Angel Correa.

Ronaldo then blasted home the resulting penalty kick for his hat-trick, his team’s victory for a 3-2 aggregate win and passage into the quarter-finals.

Mohamed Salah’s delightful first-half strike gave Liverpool a 1-0 win over Napoli at Anfield on Tuesday, an advance into the UEFA Champions League’s last 16 and the Italian side crashing out.

Liverpool knew that a 1-0 win, or a victory by two goals or more, would be enough to seal a top two spot in Group C.

Salah was again the hero for the hosts, scoring what proved to be the winner in the 34th minute.

Napoli pressed for a leveller in the second half, with Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson denying Arkadiusz Milik in stoppage time.

But the home side’s resolute defence — which has conceded just six Premier League goals all season so far —- stood firm.

Paris St Germain’s 4-1 victory at Red Star Belgrade meant they finished top with 11 points.

Napoli, who started the day leading the way, exited the competition as Liverpool snatched second spot on goals scored after both teams finished with nine points.

Jurgen Klopp stuck with the midfield three that struggled against PSG in their last UEFA Champions League match and it was Napoli who found their rhythm first

Salah was then presented with a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock, but his touch let him down at the last moment.

At the other end, Marek Hamsik could not find the target from a good position.

Kalidou Koulibaly was doing a fine job of marking Salah, until the Egyptian produced a moment of magic to score the only goal of the game.

He skipped past Koulibaly before slotting in from a tight angle — his 34th goal for Liverpool in 2018 in all competitions.

Liverpool really should have extended their lead in the second half, with Salah firing wide from a good position, before Sadio Mane was denied by a fine save from David Ospina.

Napoli saved their best attacking play for the latter stages, with Jose Callejon firing over from close range, before Mane somehow shot wide when he should have scored.

Milik almost broke Liverpool hearts right at the death, only to be denied by Alisson, who raced from his line to make a game-saving block.

Chelsea suffered a heavy blow in their late-season push for a Champions League spot when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to struggling Huddersfield Town in the Premier League.

Huddersfield, who needed a point to be sure of avoiding relegation, took a shock lead in the 50th minute at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

This was after a long ball from Aaron Mooy found Laurent Depoitre who won a challenge with Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero on the edge of the box and put the ball in the empty net.

It was Huddersfield’s first attempt on goal and Chelsea were back level 13 minutes later when a defensive clearance struck Marcos Alonso on the head and rebounded into the net.

Chelsea kept up the pressure as they pushed for a winner and Huddersfield keeper Jonas Lossl turned a header by Andreas Christensen on to the post.

But the visitors held on to secure their Premier League status and Chelsea remained outside the Champions League spots in fifth place with one game left in the season.

A determined AS Roma beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 on Tuesday to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2008.

A magnificent finish by Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko sent the Italian side through on away goals in spite of a 2-2 ending.

Roma celebrated only their second win in six meetings with the Ukrainian side and got revenge for a 6-2 aggregate defeat at the same stage of the competition in 2011.

They endured a nervy finish, however, as Shakhtar ended the match on the front foot in spite of playing the final few minutes with 10 men after Ivan Ordets was red-carded.

Having trailed 2-1 from the first leg, Roma looked bereft of ideas for much of the contest at the Stadio Olimpico before Dzeko broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute.

This was after a tepid first half devoid of goal-mouth action.

The Bosnian took a defence-splitting pass from midfielder Kevin Strootman into his stride and beat the offside trap.

He then steered the ball into the far corner with the outside of his foot past advancing goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov.

The former Manchester City striker has been linked with a move back to the English Premier League, but said after the match that he did not want to leave Roma.

He was given a rousing send-off by the home fans when he was substituted in the dying minutes.

“Everyone deserves a standing ovation because we all gave absolutely everything tonight and we fully deserve to be in the quarter-finals,” Dzeko said.

“We achieved something that’s been missing for 10 years and are now prepared to face anyone in the last eight. All the other teams are strong but we are strong too.”

Shakhtar came close to extending their overall advantage in the 13th minute.

This was when Roma defender Alessandro Florenzi headed a floated free kick into the box inches wide of his own far post.

Roma’s solitary glimpse of goal in the opening half came in the 28th minute.

Visiting goalkeeper Pyatov palmed away a fizzing low cross by Aleksandar Kolarov to deny Dzeko a simple tap-in from close range.

The home side came out with renewed purpose in the second half and Dzeko delighted their vocal fans when he broke the deadlock with a trademark clinical finish.

Dzeko also curled a shot from the edge of the penalty area inches wide in the 62nd minute.

Thereafter, Shakhtar centre-back Ordets was shown a straight red card in the 79th for hauling down the Bosnian when he was through on goal.

In spite of being a man down, Shakhtar launched a late onslaught and had several dangerous raids down the left flank but the home team’s defence held on until the final whistle.

Roma’s former captain Francesco Totti, who watched anxiously from the terraces, was overjoyed at full-time.

“A fantastic result, a fantastic Roma,” he said on the club’s official twitter account. “Among the eight best sides in Europe and we push onto the next round.”

Manchester City beat Napoli 2-1 in their UEFA Champions League Group F match on Tuesday, maintaining their 100 percent record after three games.

Pep Guardiola’s side were however forced to hang on in spite of going 2-0 up inside 13 minutes.

City started as they left off in their 7-2 crushing of Stoke City in the Premier League on Saturday.

They attacked with a speed and fluency which the Serie A leaders struggled to cope with.

Raheem Sterling put the home side ahead in the ninth minute, finishing with his left foot after Kyle Walker’s attempt to convert a David Silva pull-back was blocked.

Four minutes later, the in-form Kevin De Bruyne created the second, powering down the right flank and delivering a pinpoint low cross to Gabriel Jesus who made no mistake.

The Premier League leaders were producing wave after wave of attacks and the appreciative crowd sensed that this could be another massacre.

De Bruyne fired a long-range shot against the bar in the 25th minute after a swift City counter-attack, and then Jesus had a goalbound effort cleared off the line by Kalidou Koulibaly.

But then City began to lose focus, sloppily giving the ball away in dangerous positions, slowing down their breaks, and Napoli sensed that the game might not be just about damage limitation.

The Italians had an opportunity to narrow the deficit in the 38th minute after Kyle Walker gave away a penalty kick.

But City’s Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson produced a fine save to keep out Dries Mertens’ spot-kick.

After the break, Napoli grew into the game, with some clever touches and smart movement troubling the City defence.

John Stones needed to use his midriff to stop a Marek Hamsik shot that was heading for an open goal.

Napoli’s reward came when they got a second chance from the spot in the 73rd minute, this time Amadou Diawara firing home after Faouzi Ghoujlam was tripped by Fernandinho.

Despite some late pressure from Maurizio Sarri’s side, City showed some grit as they held on to secure their third straight win which leaves them on top of the group with nine points.

“We knew they played patient football and had attacking threat. We knew it would be tough but we wanted to play our football,” said City defender John Stones.

“At times it was great to watch. I am upset to concede the goal we did, but overall … a great team performance.

“We have put ourselves in a good position (in the group). There are a lot of games to play still. This was a good test to see where we are at,” he added.

Napoli are third on three points, trailing second-placed Shakhtar Donetsk who are on six.

Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to snatch a 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday with the last kick of the game.

The result took Antonio Conte’s side top of Champions League Group C.

France international Antoine Griezmann rammed a penalty kick beyond former Atletico goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to give the home side a barely-deserved lead in the 40th minute.

He was scoring the first European goal at their new stadium after striking the first Liga goal there this month.

Former Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata, who also spent time in Atletico’s youth system, pulled Chelsea level by glancing in Eden Hazard’s cross in the 60th minute.

This was after the visitors had failed to make their first-half dominance count.

Batshuayi replaced Morata with seven minutes remaining and inflicted a first home defeat on Atletico since September, 2015.

It turns wide a Marcos Alonso cutback from close range deep into stoppage-time.

“It’s very difficult when Atletico score [first] to come back, but in spite of this we deserved to win. We continued to play with good personality, we kept our heads on the pitch in every moment,” Chelsea coach Conte told a news conference.

“We must be pleased with the performance and overall the personality we showed.

“I always tell my players that it doesn’t change when you play at home or away, you have to play with the same personality and desire to play and try to deserve to win.”

Atletico coach Diego Simeone has likened his side’s new home to the Circus Maximus in Rome.

The club’s famously vociferous fans made a noise fitting of the biggest game in the stadium’s short existence, but Chelsea soon calmed the crowd.

Hazard, without a goal in the Champions League since March 2015, was Chelsea’s chief creator.

He dashed through the middle to lay the ball off for Morata to screw wide and then hitting the woodwork himself with a ferocious long-range strike.

“Chelsea felt more comfortable than us and won the game deservedly,” said Atletico coach Simeone.

“They were superior tactically and physically. They are a very competitive team, they showed more maturity than us and we have to congratulate them.”

Atletico struggled to get into Chelsea’s half but capitalised from their first real foray forward.

A deflected shot from Saul Niguez earned a corner kick from which David Luiz hauled Lucas Hernandez to the floor, leaving Griezmann to score a third goal in four games.

Simeone’s side could have grabbed a second on the cusp of halftime when Courtois could only hold Koke’s stinging shot but Saul slotted the rebound just wide of the near post.

A two-goal deficit would have been grossly unfair on Conte’s adventurous side, who also had the better of the second half.

Morata wasted a chance to strike again when he skipped towards goal unchallenged, scuffing the ball wide of Jan Oblak’s goal.

But Belgian international Batshuayi needed just one chance to grab the win that was as dramatic as it was deserved.
