Manchester City’s Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus has warned that there could be an increase in injuries this season due to the extra demands placed on players.

In the same vein, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp also hit out at the Premier League over their substitutes rule.

Jesus, who has recently come back from injury, scored in Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

He will now fly to South America to take part in FIFA World Cup qualifiers with Brazil.

“My physical condition is not the same and now I go to my international team and try to help my country and when I come back I will try to come back in good physical condition,” the striker said.

“That is the challenge for me, keep fit and don’t get injured because this season is going to be dangerous for players because (of) too many games.”

The later start to the 2020/2021 season, caused by the delay in the completion of last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to a more compressed schedule.

It is tougher for teams in the UEFA Champions League.

Klopp has been vocal in his criticism of the Premier League’s decision not to stick with last year’s temporary rule allowing five instead of three substitutions.

Premier League clubs voted against continuing with the five substitutions rule, which remains in place in many European competitions.

Smaller clubs had argued that the big teams had an advantage given their larger squads.

Yet Klopp took aim at Premier League’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Richard Masters, for failing to convince the clubs.

“It’s a lack of leadership. Richard Masters asked about it. All the other teams have to understand. It’s not an advantage, it is a necessity.

“We have to talk again. Masters sold it completely wrong. (We are) the only big league with three subs,” he said.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he had talked about the issue at the end of the game after the champions’ right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered an injury.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold, international English player, now injured. Here we believe we are more special, we don’t protect the players. So, that is why it is a disaster,” Guardiola said.

“We talked about five substitutions. There are many guys with many, many cases. Around the world five subs are key, but here it’s totally the opposite. We’ve talked about this many times.”

English Premier League clubs voted on Wednesday to allow replays of incidents reviewed by Video Assistant Referees (VAR) to be shown on big screens in stadiums.

“If the VAR believes there is a definitive video-clip which helps explain an overturned decision to fans, it will be broadcast on giant screens,” the Premier League said in a statement on Wednesday.

VAR, which allows incidents to be reviewed with the help of video replays, was used at last year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia and this season’s UEFA Champions League knockout stages.

It will be implemented in the Premier League in England from next season.

The Premier League confirmed it was also looking at ways for supporters to view the clips on handheld devices via an app.

For clubs that do not have giant screens in their stadium, VAR communications will be made through a combination of announcements and messages on scoreboards.

The Premier League has also created graphics that will be displayed on giant screens to explain any VAR-related delay to a match, and any overturned decision.

VAR has already been in use in other top European leagues such as Germany’s Bundesliga and Spain’s La Liga but replays have never been shown to the supporters inside the stadium.

This has left the supporters in the dark while referees take a closer look.

English Premier League leaders Chelsea moved closer towards clinching the title on Sunday with three second half goals for a 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park.

Pedro opened scores with a 25-yard stunner before Gary Cahill’s close-range finish extended the lead, while Willian’s tap-in took the match beyond the hosts.

The win moved Antonio Conte’s side seven points clear of second-placed Tottenham, who faced Arsenal later on Sunday.

It means the Blues could drop three points in their remaining four games and still claim a second title in three years, even if Spurs win all of their remaining fixtures.

Before then, Chelsea had to be patient, with Pedro’s left-footed, long-range strike not coming until the 66th minute.

Cahill sealed the win when Maarten Stekelenburg parried Eden Hazard’s free-kick onto the onrushing defender, before Willian slotted home from Cesc Fabregas’ cutback.

Everton had started brightly in a game that opened at breakneck speed, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin going closest to scoring when he struck the post from a tight angle.

Manchester City’s draw at Middlesbrough means Ronald Koeman’s side, in seventh, are eight points adrift of the top four with three games left.

This may have been Tottenham’s strongest hope of Chelsea surrendering points in their run-in.

Everton are placed higher than any of their four remaining opponents, and three home games on the horizon for the Blues.

It could prove to be the killer blow to Spurs’ spirited challenge.

This seems to answer the question of whether Chelsea can handle the growing pressure applied by their London rivals’ eight-game winning run in the league.

The maths are simple for Chelsea — win three more games and they will be Premier League champions for the sixth time.

And the celebrations from Conte and his players at the final whistle suggested the Blues feel they can get over the line in games against Middlesbrough, West Brom, Watford and Sunderland.

If they add an FA Cup final win against Arsenal on May 27, Conte would have had a remarkable first season in English football.

Visiting Swansea on Sunday held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at the end of a pulsating English Premier League (EPL) encounter at Old Trafford.

A sublime free-kick by Icelandic international Gylfi Sigurdsson gained Premier League strugglers Swansea a well deserved point with Manchester United.

It was reported that ot was a result which dealt a blow to United’s UEFA Champions League hopes.

Sigurdsson’s 10th goal of the season but his first in 11 matches cancelled out veteran Wayne Rooney’s contentious penalty kick in the 79th minute.

Manchester United had taken the lead in time added on in the first-half from the penalty kick spot.

This was after Marcus Rashford made the most out of a minimal contact with ‘Swans’ goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

The point saw United move level on points with city rivals Manchester City but remained fifth, a place outside the automatic spot for the Champions League on poor goal difference.

It will be of little consolation to manager Jose Mourinho that it extended their unbeaten run to 25 and an unbeaten run at Old Trafford since Sept. 10 last year.

Unfortunately for Mourinho, he saw two more defenders depart injured in the impressive Eric Bailly on the hour mark and Luke Shaw.

“We lost players and we lost points. So, yes, today was a bad day,” he said after the match.

“We did not look tired and exhausted, we are tired and exhausted. You cannot isolate the performance out of the context. This is the ninth match of April, it is not human.

“We have a squad of 22 that is reduced to 13 or 14 players. The players are very tired.

“I am more than happy with the players, they gave everything they could. I have zero criticism.

“I don’t know about the injuries. I think Luke Shaw’s must be a big injury, because to leave the pitch after 10 minutes I am expecting a very big injury.

“At the moment, we cannot walk from the bed to the loo and break a leg.”

His Swansea counterpart Paul Clement said Rashford had “deceived the referee” but added the point enforced their belief they could retain their elite status.

They are two points adrift of fourth from bottom Hull with three matches remaining.

“That is arguably a clean sheet today and we go into the next game against Everton fully believing that we can stay in this league for next season,” said Clement.

In other results of EPL matches played also today, Gabriel Jesus scored a late equaliser as Manchester City twice came from behind to draw 2-2.

It meant they were able to rescue a point in the race for a top-four finish.

It was reported that Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho who has struggled for game time under Pep Guardiola could not even make the bench for this particular encounter.

Chelsea’s lead at the top of the English Premier League now stands at only four points and the title race is wide open again after they were well beaten on Sunday.

The leaders were beaten 2-0 by a resurgent Manchester United at Old Trafford.

United manager Jose Mourinho has suffered this season against the club where he was a three-time champion, losing 0-4 in the league at Chelsea.

He also lost out of the FA Cup quarter-final at Stamford Bridge.

The Portuguese was not to be denied this time as Marcus Rashford, paired with Jesse Lingard up front while a jaded Zlatan Ibrahimovic was rested, finished coolly after seven minutes.

Ander Herrera — detailed to do a brilliant man-marking job on Eden Hazard — saw his shot deflected in off Kurt Zouma four minutes after the break.

Zouma was a late replacement for Marcos Alonso, who pulled out in the warm-up, but Chelsea can offer no excuses here as they were second best throughout.

Tottenham now trail them by four points with six games to go and have the superior goal difference.

Chelsea looked to be strolling to the title just a few weeks ago — but a sudden stumble, including the home defeat by struggling Crystal Palace, has held them back.

And an irresistible surge from Spurs have brought renewed edge to the run-in.

Conte will feel his side did not enjoy the best of luck here, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois ruled out with a training injury, while Alonso was withdrawn after the warm-up.

Referee Bobby Madley also missed what appeared to be a clear handball from Herrera as he intercepted Nemanja Matic’s pass before sending Rashford clear for the opener.

The Blues are still in a strong position but they are now feeling the hot breath of Spurs on their neck.

This was after Pochettino’s team made it seven successive league wins for the first time since 1967 with a 4-0 home win over Bournemouth on Saturday,

So, Spurs have the momentum, but Chelsea still have a four-point lead, which counts for a lot with only six games left.

The Blues’ run-in also looks a little kinder, with home games against Southampton, Middlesbrough, Watford and Sunderland — but a real test to come at Everton.

The pressure, however, is now applied and there may be twists left in this race and Spurs will feel renewed hope.
