Police arrests Human Rights activist over dupe in Niger

A Minna, Niger State based Human Rights Crusader (name withheld) was arrested on Friday by men of the State Police Command over allegation of for duping a thrift collector in the state capital.

The human rights crusader, according to a police source, had been approached to assist in the collection of money which some contributors refused to pay to the thrift collector.

According to police source who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity in Minna said the crusader agreed to do the assignment and an agreement was reached that he would be paid 15percent of the total collection.

The report further had it that the human rights campaigner actually performed the assignment but allegedly diverted both his commission and the thrift collector’s money to personal use.

Further checks revealed that several months after the thrift collector was unable to collect his money and therefore dragged  the human rights crusader to a Minna Chief Magistrate Court,  which declined to entertain the case on the excuse that  ‘the court is not a debt collector’.

It therefore referred the case to the police for investigation and prosecution.

The police at first arrested and detain the crusader but later released him on police bail using his Four runner Mercedes Benz as guarantee.

Niger State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer {PPRO}, ASP Bala Elkana when contacted, confirmed the incident.

Elkana said the human rights crusader would be charged to court for cheating and duping.
