Guber polls: US warns against violence in Kogi, Bayelsa
The United States Tuesday warned against any plans to foment violence before, during and after the Kogi and Bayelsa States governorship elections.
The United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria in a statement urged Nigerians to refrain from any action capable of upsetting the peace of the nation or the two states involved in the exercise.
The US quoting the Nigerian Constitution reminded Nigerians that “it is the duty of every citizen to respect the dignity of other citizens and the rights and legitimate interests of citizens to live in unity and harmony”.
The country, however, asked political parties, elected leaders and candidates for political offices to uphold the right democratic precepts needed for peaceful conduct of the polls.
The US also reaffirmed its commitment to working with Nigeria in strengthening the nation’s democratic institutions in the years to come.
Kogi and Bayelsa States Governorship Elections are scheduled to hold on November 21, 2015 and December 5 respectively.
