LG Chair resigns in Taraba over threat to life
Justin Facii, Jalingo
Caretaker Chairman, Zing Local Government area of Taraba State, Alhaji Haruna Konko has resigned his position.
Konko who addressed journalists in Jalingo on Tuesday night said he was resigning in the interest of peace and security of his family and the good people of his Local Government.
He said he has been undergoing constant intimidation and harassment from top stakeholders in area since the death of Kpanti Zing, Alhaji Abbas Sambo who died during the hajj stampede in Mecca.
“I have not been sleeping well since the death of the late Kpanti Zing Alhaji Abbas Sambo because of impunity from high places. Some youths in the area have continued to give me sleepless nights, and I can’t continue like this,” he said.
The Ex-council boss accused relevant authorities in the state of keeping quiet in the whole matter while the peace of the area was being threatened.
The resignation of the chairman may not be unconnected to the role he played during the Chieftaincy tussle in the area, following protest by the Mumuye people of the area that the next Kpanti must be someone who could uphold their culture and tradition.
Mr. Konko was said to have ordered the police to arrest and detain Alhaji Sulaima Sambo whom the masses wanted as the next Kpanti of Zing for being behind the protest.
Alhaji Sulaima Sambo has been elected as the Kpanti Zing, but the youths in the area allegedly refused to forgive the chairman for the role he played, the situation that led to his resignation on Tuesday.
