Lassa fever: Gombe Govt confirms death of 4 patients

Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre Jalingo, Dr. Wiza Inusa on Tuesday said three persons have so far lost their lives following outbreak of Lassa Fever in Taraba on December 25, last year.

Wiza who said two others were currently receiving treatment in the hospital urged the public not to panic as efforts are been made by the hospital management and the state government to contain the situation.

He advised the public to maintain simple basic hygienic procedures to avoid the spread.

“The disease is carried by rats and simple basic hygienic procedures such as keeping foods, pots and plates clean and out of reach by rats will prevent the spread of the disease.

“I want to appeal to anyone who develop fever, abdominal pain and bleeding among other strange health symptoms to quickly report to the hospital for medical attention,” he said.

Wiza explained that when diagnosed and treated early, the patient stands a better chance of survival than when it is late, reiterating the need for people with the symptoms to report early for treatment.

He cautioned people to avoid crowded places and reduce handshakes as precaution against the spread of the disease. “If anyone die of a strange condition, a medical personnel should be informed,” he added.
