Oyo sports council attributes success to solid preparation
The tremendous achievements of Oyo State athletes at National and international championships in recent times have been attributed to solid preparation and prompt intervention of Governor Abiola Ajimobi to the needs of the council.
Mr. Gboyega Makinde, State Director of Sports Organisation disclosed this in statement made available to NEWSVERGE on Tuesday.
Oyo State has produced 15 enterprising athletes who represented Nigeria in nine sports at the 2015 African Games held in Congo Brazzaville.
The Director mentioned that the state’s representative in powerlifting, Yakubu Adesokan set a new world record, a repeat of his achievement at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
The State flag bearers at the championship eventually won nine medals out of 144 medals received by the country.
Kehinde Joy Obareh, joined Adesokan Yakubu by winning Gold medal in boxing, while Gbolahan Olaiya, a para-athlete won two bronze medals.
Others include Ndubusi Joseph, who came back home with two bronze medals in weightlifting, while Monica Uwen also received 2 silver medals and one bronze medal in same sport.
It would be recalled that victorious sports men and women were rewarded recently in Abuja by President Muhammadu Buhari at a presidential reception organised for outstanding athletes and officials who did Nigeria proud in recent sports competitions, which had Oyo State sports ambassadors in attendance.
