Assembly congratulates Osun NUJ new exco
The State of Osun House of Assembly under the leadership of Rt. Hon Najeem Salaam on Friday congratulated the newly-elected Chairman, Osun Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Abiodun Olalere and other members of the executive.
Olalere, a reporter in Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) was re-elected for another three- year tenure on Thursday, having defeated his major contender, Dele Ajayi from the Uniq FM, Ilesa.
In a congratulatory message by the Chairman, House Committee on Information and Strategy, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, the Assembly said, with the conduct of members at the election, they have shown a good example of gatekeepers.
He then urged the new executive to work in strengthening professionalism and pay attention to the welfare of the union members, raise the standard of the profession as well root out quacks.
The Assembly charges the leadership as well as Union members to do more of conflict sensitive reporting especially at a time that the nation was passing through crucial challenges.
Oyintiloye noted that the circumstances in the country required diligence from journalists in the areas of information management and dissemination.
“The power of the pen should be to promote peace and not to escalate conflict”. It is to pave the way for prosperity and not despondency” Oyintiloye stressed.
The house urged the new leadership to set agenda for government and work with stakeholders to re-orientate the society from crave of materialism.
According to him, though, members of the NUJ in Osun have demonstrated high level of maturity in reporting event to promote peace and harmony, but members should be encourage to do more. “Journalism is a profession that many people cherish so much, because without media, the society will be in the dark and development will be impossible. “What it mean is that Nigerians are looking up to you to continue to promote professionalism that would in turn promote development in our land”, he said.
The parliament then urged member of the union in the state to support the new executive to succeed in running the affairs of the union in the state as well as put the differences of electioneering and politicking behind them.
It also charged members as partners in the development of Osun State to continue to support the government, the state assembly and other arms of government in its efforts at taking the state to another developmental level.
