Slain lawyer’s husband for burial

The late Oyelowo who was killed at the age of 38 was the only brother of the Presiding Pastor / General Overseer of the Pentecostal Fellowship Assembly (PFA), Julius Olaolu Orowumi.

In a statement, Pastor Orowumi said that as a part of activities lined up for the burial, service of songs would be held in his honour ,on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at Pentecostal Fellowship Assembly (PFA) at 103, Iju Road, Ajilete Bus Stop , Ifako-Agege, Lagos at 5p.m.

He said the family took the decision to bury him since the police had concluded their investigations and post-mortem done.

The burial service will be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) Oke Osun Diocese, Gbongan, Osun State.

Interment will follow immediately after a brief Church Service at the Church Cementry, Oke-Elu, Gbongan.

It will be recalled that Oyelowo, popularly called “Uncle Lowo” by relations and friends was brutally stabbed to death by his wife Yewande, a 34 year-old lawyer who worked with the Directorate of Public Prosecution in the Oyo State Ministry of Justice after a domestic dispute at their home in Akobo Estate, in Ibadan on February 2, 2016.

Our investigations showed that the matter had been transferred from the Magistrate Court to the State High Court and the first hearing was on Wednesday February 17, 2016, where the Chief Judge of Oyo State presided over the sitting. At the hearing, the family of Oyelowo, through their lawyer, prayed the court, that for there to be justice to all stakeholders in the case, it will be fair and appropriate for an impartial independent legal practitioners to prosecute the case on behalf of the Government of Oyo State.

This was because of the fact that the accused herself is a legal officer not only in the Ministry of Justice, but, also, an officer in the Directorate of Public Prosecution that is lawfully vested with handling of cases like this.

The weird development has elicited several comments on social media, especially Facebook and Twitter. Angela Agoawike, a senior journalist on Facebook said: “I do not know what a husband would do to his wife that would cause her to pick a knife and slit the man’s throat as he sleeps. This murder is nothing but premeditated and irrespective of her connections, I hope the law will be allowed to take its cause.”

Also, Mercy Williams wrote: “What a world we live in, how can a wife stab her husband to death without remembering the marriage vows and the love they both once shared?

Yet, Relindis Okafor Chisom, also commented on Facebook, “Have you ever heard of the word ‘separation’ when it comes to marriage? Why didn’t she leave the man since she couldn’t stand the beatings? “For Amara Ibe-Iyke-Ogbonna, also on Facebook, “I’m shocked that some people are trying to justify this evil act. Nobody has the right to take another person’s life. Walk away. Love and marriage is not by force.”
