Ogun education sector gets a boost with learning aid

Ogun State Government has charged parents and guardians to ensure that their children and wards prepare adequately as another season of external examinations approach.

The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Modupe Mujota gave the charge at the commissioning of MultiChoice Resource Centre at Agunbiade Victory High School, Magbon, Abeokuta.

She said though education was free in Ogun State, it must be impressed upon the children to excel in the examinations to extract maximum value for investing in the sector.

According to the Commissioner, “though we run a free education policy, it places more responsibility on our taxpaying shoulders to extract maximum value from our investment. It must be impressed upon our children to study hard and excel in these examinations’’.

She said it was imperative for stakeholders in the sector to continue to work together to reverse the current drop in the performance of students in the West African Senior School Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO).

Mujota acknowledged the support of individuals and corporate bodies in identifying with Government’s commitment towards the provision of affordable and qualitative education in the State.

The Education Commissioner appreciated Multi-choice for providing Resource Centres for 22 public secondary schools in the State, saying that the gesture was an endorsement of youth-oriented initiatives in education.

While calling on the management and students of Agunbiade Victory High School, Magbon and other schools provided with similar facilities to use the equipment to upgrade their academic performance in both internal and external examinations, Mrs Mujota urged them to maintain and make effective use of the equipment, warning that her Ministry would not take kindly with any school that carelessly handle any material or facility in public schools.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Multi-choice, Mr John Ugbe, represented by Public Relations Manager, GOtv, Ms Efe Obiomah, said the MultiChoice Resource Centre initiative that started ten years ago was aimed at using audio and video technology to impact knowledge into students to raise the standard of education through sight and sound.

She said the centre provided with a Television set, DStv dish, PVR decoder, generating set and other accessories have been replicated in 22 public secondary schools across the State.

In his remarks, the Principal of the school, Mr Olamiji Bashir Sowunmi, thanked the company for choosing the school for the project, pledging that the facilities at the centre would be adequately maintained.
