Group lauds Buhari’s order to clampdown on armed herdsmen
A Pressure Group, Concerned Taraba Tiv Youth Frontier, on Thursday commended President Muhammadu Buhari for ordering Security Chiefs to clampdown on armed Fulani herdsmen terrorising communities across the country.
Chairman of the group, Comrade Dooior Torkula gave the commendation at press briefing in Jalingo.
Dooior who commended the step taken by President Buhari to end the killings by herdsmen across the country, wonder why it took the President too long to react to the killings.
“President Obama put off his visit to one Asian country in response to the shooting of school children in Connecticut. Over there, lives are precious and leaders in the west have respect for human lives.
“I wonder why I took the president a long time to come to terms that killings by herdsmen in the states of Taraba, Plateau, Benue and Nasarawa was a threat to the nation, until the attack in Enugu.
“If the Presidential directive to clampdown on rampaging herdsmen came earlier than now, it would have save hundreds of precious lives lost in recent attacks by the herdsmen across the country,” he said.
He called on the National Assembly and the State Houses of Assembly to pass a law mandating ‘ranching’ of cattle as a way out of the frequent herders/farmers clashes in the country.
According to him, ranching remain the best way of rearing cattle in the 21st century, noting that a lot would be derived from cattle that are in the ranch than continuing with the traditional nomadic way of rearing cattle.
Apart from the protein we get in eating beef, Nigeria as a country is losing billions of naira in revenue in the present style of rearing cattle. Ranching will provide jobs for the people, make Nigeria benefit from the export of cow milk and skin in addition to other benefits.”
The chairman also called on the federal government to provide relief materials to those displaced in Taraba, and also set up funds for victims of herdsmen attack to rehabilitate the victims.
