US worried over Niger Delta violence
The United States of America on Tuesday expressed concern over persistent range of violence in the south-south region of Nigeria by the Niger-Delta Avenger militant group.
The US Mission to Nigeria in a statement from the Information Office, Public Affairs Section of the Embassy said that it has been monitoring reports of the attacks and other incidents in the Niger Delta. “We share the concerns of all Nigerians about these attacks, said the statement.
The mission however assured that the US Government remain supportive of effort to dialogue with concerned parties to address the grievances in the Niger Delta.
“We encourage all parties to resolve their disputes through peaceful means as human rights of all Nigerians must be protected.
“We continue to call on all Nigerians to persevere in the efforts to achieve common goals: to end the violence and curb the activities of criminal elements; to establish conditions and mechanisms for profound, positive, and lasting changes in the region; and to provide economic opportunity and needed services for residents of the Niger Delta.”
