Nigerian students studying in US ranked first in Africa

The United State Consulate General Public Affairs Section, Lagos Tuesday said about 974,926 international students in the U.S, 33,593 come from sub-Saharan Africa and Nigeria ranks first in the region.

The Education U.S. Adviser, Chinenye Uwadileke, said that 50.2 per cent are undergraduates, 35 per cent are graduates, 2 per cent are non-degree candidates, and the remaining 12.6 per cent are spending one year on optional practical training.

Uwadileke, at the annual Pre-Departure Orientation for Nigerian students admitted to U.S. universities for the 2016-17 academic year in Lagos, stressed that Nigeria sent 67 students to intensive English programs and about 60 research scholars to U.S last year.

The IIE survey covers regionally accredited, degree-granting institutions and counts as nationals of this county all temporary visa holders: F-1, J-1 and M-1 Uwadileke stated.

“Students from Nigeria attend more than 797 institutions in 50 different states, the most popular state is Texas with 1,540 students while the most popular college/ university is Houston Community College with 220 students”, she quoted.

In Nigeria, there are two centers located in Lagos and Abuja, the network promotes U.S higher education to students around the world by offering accurate, comprehensive and current information about opportunities to study at accredited post-secondary in the United States.
