UNN nabs 3 suspected armed robbery students
Three students have been arrested by the combined teams of police and University of Nigeria Nsukka security department for robbery of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre of the university.
The three students who were identified by the security department as Iwuoha Elochukwu (aka Elo whyte), Johnson Somtochukwu (Sticky) and Emeka Ani Johnson (Nelly) are students of Departments of Psychology, Agric Science and Biochemistry respectively. They are said to have been terrorizing the university and its environ in Nsukka while their leader, simply identified as Humphrey, and said to be in the Faculty of Engineering, is still at large.
Daily Times gathered from the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the University, Mr. Cyracus Uzoma, that the three suspected students have since confessed to the crime and some other robbery incidents in and around the university.
He said items already recovered from the three include plasma television sets, refrigerators, split unit air conditioners, film projectors, 14 laptops, and female hand bags, among others.
Uzoma said the three robbery suspects have been handed over to the police by the University for prosecution while they are on the trail of the gang leader.
According to the CSO the suspects who are also members of secret cults were arrested based on tip-off at different hideouts at Onuiyi in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu state.
“It took both the police and the security department several days of sleepless nights to arrests the student robbers”, he said.
When contacted for comment, the Area Commander, Nigeria Police, Nsukka, Mr. Monday Kuyarsi (ACP), confirmed the arrest of the three students and said full scale investigations have commenced into the matter while a manhunt for the fleeing gang leader is in top gear.
