Chi Farms, USAID partner to boost food security in Nigeria
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and a leading Nigerian agro allied company, Chi Farms, have entered into a partnership that is projected to contribute to food security in Nigeria by adding over 4,000 metric tonnes of catfish to local markets in the country annually.
The project is part of the US government’s Feed the Future initiative. The programme will also get over 6,000 soya and maize farmers trained to meet the quality standards of Chi Farms.
According to the terms of the partnership, Chi Farms will engage small holder farmers in catfish breeding. These will be expected to join the supply chain of the fish feed mill.
According to Executive Director, Chi Farms Limited, Martin Middernacht, the partnership would enhance food security in Nigeria.
“This development will add positively to the overall food security in Nigeria.” He said.
Middernacht expressed delight at the support from USAID, he believe the partnership will enhance the nations economy.
“We are convinced that working with out-growers is a step in the right direction towards sustainable economic development.” He noted.
Representative of USAID, Mr Rowland Oroh, expressed the organisation’s desire to work with Chi Farms which he described as ‘trusted partners’ towards ensuring food security in Nigeria.
He added that the organisation will support support Nigeria by empowering local farmers.
