Police arraign man for defamation of character
The Police on Thursday arraigned a 58 year-old-man, Nuhu Mohammed, before a Sokoto Magistrates’ Court for defaming the character of one Maryam Saidu.
The prosecuting police officer, Sgt. Zarumai Leo said the accused resides in Rumbukawa area of Sokoto.
He said the accused usually go to the back of Saidu’s house also in Rumbukawa area to rain abusive words on her.
Leo said that Mohammed was arraigned on a one-count charge of criminal conspiracy, disturbance and defamation of character.
He said the offence contradicts sections 114 and 392 of the Penal Code Law of Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
“The accused usually go to the back of Maryam’s house to rain abusive words on her and call her all sorts of names like prostitute, murderer.
“The accused called the defendant murderer of her biological mother and that her son Kabiru Saidu is a bastard,” the prosecutor said.
The prosecutor said the accused had earlier been reported to the District Head of Rumbukawa, who warned him to desist from such behaviour.
The accused however pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
The Magistrate, Abubakar Adamu, granted the accuse N50, 000 bail with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till Feb. 10 for further mention.
