NSE educates varsity students, staff on capital market operation
The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) has organised a one-day Financial Literacy Programme for staff and students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna.
This was disclosed in a statement by Mrs Lydia Lugbu, Public Relations Officer of the University and made available to Newsverge in Minna on Friday.
The programme is part of its mandate to increase awareness on the capital market.
According to the statement, the facilitator of the programme, Mr Emmanuel Okoh of Finmal Finance Services, explained the operations of the capital market.
He explained how to start a business; sources of funding a business; the benefits of investing in shares, determinants of investment returns and investment life cycle.
Mr. Okoh also explained the risks in the market and bad investment habits to avoid.
He also educated the students about Ponzi scheme operators and their characteristics, noting that they downplayed the risk of investment and were usually not registered with regulators.
On how educational institutions could partner the capital market, Mr. Okoh stated that they could assist in raising awareness and knowledge about the market.
He stressed the need for them to maintain database of alumni, establish dedicated fund-raising offices and have regular communication with the alumni, while ensuring accountability in the management of funds.
Earlier, the Dean, School of Entrepreneurship and Management Technology (SEMT), Prof. Emmanuel Oni, noted that it was a privilege to have the capital market professionals in the university.
He said the current economic recession in the country was an opportunity for entrepreneurs and urged the students to take the programme seriously as the knowledge gained might be useful to forge ahead after school.
Head of EBS department, Dr. Modupe Adeyeye, congratulated the participants on being the first to partake in the proogramme in the country.
She said the event marked the beginning of collaboration between the department and the NSE and appealed to the exchange to give students from the department the opportunity to do their internship.
Adeyeye also appealed to officials of the exchange to help in assessing the students’ business plans, serve as resource persons during their events and donate books to the department.
