The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan has begun another round of training of consultants in geriatric medicine.

Prof. Temitope Alonge, UCH Chief Medical Director, disclosed this to Newsverge on Tuesday in Ibadan.

He said that the training for medical experts was in line with the hospital’s commitment towards providing good healthcare services for the aged.

Newsverge reports that geriatric medicine is a field that focuses on healthcare of the aged people through the prevention and treatment of their peculiar diseases and disabilities.

Alonge said that participants would be given a Basic Certificate in Geriatric Medicine at the end of the 10-day training.

He urged participants to see the training as a clarion call to serve the peculiar needs of the aged in the society.

“There is an increasing focus on healthcare delivery of the aged people who had hitherto been treated as adult patients,’’ Alonge said.

The CMD said that graduates from the course would serve at the college’s geriatric centre that was funded by Chief Tony Anenih, a frontline politician.

He said that the centre remained the only one in Nigeria that provides medical care for the aged in Nigeria and other Africa countries.

“The centre focuses primarily on the clinical care of the older persons.

‘’It encourages research and education in geriatrics through a patient-and-family centred care, in a culturally sensitive environment,” he said.

Newsverge reports that the first training in geriatric medicine by UCH was held for 26 doctors in 2016.
