Woman seeks divorce over husband’s sexual violence
A housewife, Fulera Shehu, 23, on Friday pleaded with an Upper Area Court sitting in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, to dissolve her marriage over alleged husband’s irresponsibility, threats and sexual violence.
Shehu also told the court to dissolve the union because her 65-year-old husband, Ahmad Adamu, a businessman, has failed in his duty as a husband.
She further told the court that her husband attitude towards her has “killed the love she has for him.’’
She informed the court that she has been living with Adamu for six months, precisely from Sept. 10, 2016 and the union is yet to produce any child.
“Adamu is a very irresponsible person. He does not provide me with clothing and does not provide proper feeding for me.
“He is in the habit of insulting, beating and embarrassing me publicly, to the extent that he announced to our co-tenants that he has divorced me.
“In fact, he always threatens to kill me with knife if I do not pack my things and leave his house.
“He has no respect for my parents either, as he always insult my mother, calling her a harlot and that I am from a drama house,” Shehu told the court.
She also informed the court that the most disturbing aspect of her husband’s behaviour was that he `lacks respect for her body and his violence approach to her during sex.’’
She said, “When it comes to sleeping with me at night, he will want to go five rounds before day break, and I cannot continue like that with him.”
The petitioner told the court that she was no longer interested in the marriage, pleading for its dissolution.
She pleaded with the court to compel the respondent to allow her pack her belongings from his house.
The respondent, however, denied all the allegations, asking for more time to enable him discuss and settle issues with his wife.
The judge, Mr Ibrahim Shekarau, adjourned the case till April 11 for hearing and consideration of settlement.
