Don’t be tempted to compromise professional ethics – ICAN urges members
The Institute of Chartered Accountant (ICAN) has advised its members against compromising their professional ethics and conduct as the current economic recession can suggest.
Mr Julius Martins, the newly elected Chairman of Plateau District Society of ICAN, gave the advice on Friday during the society’s annual general meeting in Jos.
Martins described ICAN as a professional body contributing immensely to the growth and development of Nigerian economy.
According to him, every government or organisation needs an accountant to move it forward, especially in the generation of its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
“It’s unfortunate that for quite some years now, we have not been able to have access to the state government of Plateau,” he said.
He called on the government to engage more ICAN members in IGR related policies.
“Government is expected to live above board by ensuring that proper data base is put in place for development plans or goals to be achieved,” he said.
Martins expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed on him by his members and pledged to leave the society better than he met it.
Earlier, the outgoing Chairman, Mr Gyang Pam, said the society realised N16. 775 million at the end of Dec. 31, 2016 against N16.025 million in 2015.
Pam thanked members for their cooperation and support during his tenure and solicited the same, if not more, for his successor.
Our correspondent reports that other elected officers are: Mr Julius Dooiyor as Vice Chairman, Bernard Alkali as General Secretary and Mrs Victoria Olusegun as Treasurer.
The new executive will oversee the affairs of the society for the next one year.
